An Emotional Old Mau.
Tho company of scarred war vete
rans had gathered in tho town ball
and were enjoying a glorious ro-un
ion. Baked beans and ooffeo wero
circulating briskly ; reminiscences of
tho terrible war and tales off glory
and hardships wero tho order of the
day. All hearts grew tender and
many voices were husky with feeling
as thc old soldiers recounted their
experiences. Suddenly an old white
hared man, elad in tattered garments,
darted past the door-keeper into tho
hall and flung himself, sobbing, upon
thc commander's neck.
"Prison-down South-suffering
th reo years!" he exclaimed, in a par
oxysm of emotion.
"What!" cried tho commander,
"another old veteran ? Welcome,
comrade to our humble feast."
An cager group gathered about
him and a dozen questions were asked.
"What year?"
"What company '("
"Libby ?"
"Andersonville ?"
"Cnstlo Thunder?"
The old hero waved his hand ma
jestically and said, as distinctly as l.e
could :
"Mow eau I recall the awful tale ?
My blooding heart shrinks from re
opening its wounds. Lot the bene
diction of pon to flood our weary souls
with rest. I am an emotional old
mau."
"You are right," said the com
mander, deeply touched by the vete
ran's words.
"Lot joy rule this happy hour. Sit
down and part:.'.o with us."
They brought him re frosh me nts,
which ho seemed to appreciate im
mensely, and treated him as their
most honored guest. Ile adjusted
himself around four plates of beans,
two pieces of pie and live cups of
coffee and then fell to work steadily
on the sandwiches.
"How sweet," said he at length,
"to meet thus, linked by the indisso
luble bonds of fraternal love ! Ab,
how it fills my heart-and stomach !
Excuse me if I wipe away a happy
tear. I nm an emotional old man.'
All sat in reverent silence before
the old hero, until ho began on his
27th sandwich. Then the com
mander, whose heart was overflowing
with sympathy, asked in pity :
"And did they treat you harshly
in those accursed rebel prisons?"
"What rebel prisons?" said the
veteran.
"Did you not say that you were in
a Southern prison ?"
"Oh, yes. I only got out last year.
I got three years down in Texas for
borrowing a muh;. I am an emo-"
Thc corporal tried to strike him
and the commander tried to trip him
and tho doorkeeper tried to grab
him ; but he slipped from tho hall
like a bullet from a gun, and the
thought of the way in which ho had
beguiled them rendered tho entire
company emotional in the highest
degree.-Boston Illuminator.
