TREATY OF PEAGE SIGNED.
Spain Driven, nt Last, From tho

PARIS, December 10.-Tho treaty of
peace was signed at 8.45 this evening,
rho signing of the treaty to-night would
havo altprnod a subject for a great his
torical painting. Tho group gathered
the foroignoffice was impressive in itself,
whilo tho fact that tho sense of the
momentousness of the issuo which thc
act decided was deeply felt by all tho
participants, gavo impressive and BOlomii

Around tho great mahogany table sat
tho ton arbiters of tho (lest i nies of an old
and a young nation. Ranged standing
behind them wen. numerous attaches tit
tho American commission. Tho jets
from tho crystal chandeliers above tho
heads of thoso present magnified the
brilliant greon and scarlet of tho uphol
stering into gaudiness. Thoro was a
theatrical contrast botwoon tho black
clothed actors and tho scenery. To tho
Americans it was a happy muling of tho
opiloguo of war; for tho Spaniards it
was plainly a bitter tragedy, none tho
loss painful because long forsocn.
SPANIAHIIS ALMOST Oltl'811 KI).
They sat silently, as though almost
crushed, and none could withhold sym
pathy from Senor Montero Rios, tho presi

coming from his bed, was bundled in a
groat ovorcoat, although logs woro burn

Tho spirits of tho two bodies were sym

tho dinner givon them immediately after
tho mooting by tho Due Do Loubnt, and
tho Spaniards woro black frock coats.
Although tho commissioners mot at
half-past ;? o'clock, expecting to finish
their work in half an hour, the engross

to bo so troublesome that it dolaycd the
signing of tho document until 8.20,
Chief Martin, of tho American commis

Whon ho came into the chamber at

Spanish version of tho treaty. This lin

tho table, the commissioners signing
them in the order of their rank.

Montoro Bios, Senor Abarzuza, Senor
C?rnica, Senor Villanrutia and Con. Cer

opponent's treaty. Both woro tied with
Spanish and American colors.
When tho seals wcro prepared to bo
affixed, attendants woro sent scurrying
for ribbons of tho French tri color, with
which tho documents woro sealed as a
compliment to tho Fronoh hosts of tho
commissions.

Many oflicials interestedly watched
ovory detail of tho proceeding. The last
seal was impressed, tho commissioners
rose, and without formality each member
shook the hands of all his antagonists
ami exchanged assurances of sincere per
sonal esteem. Tho Spaniards afterward
commented acridly upon what they
tormcd tho bad tasfo of the Americans
in mustering aorowd of attaches to gloat
over tho consummation of their downfall
and to scramble for relics.
Tho signing was finished at 8.-?5. At
that time the door of the chamber opened,
and "Sonor Villanrutia appeared and ex

Tho treaty as signed consisted of
seventeen articles, it having been found
advisable to subdivide two or three of
tho artic'os in tho draft agreed upon at
the last mooting.

Tho commissioners of tho two nations

Tho document was prepared by Secre

Each copy contained tho English and
Spanish texts of the treaty in parallel
