Carlisle, President of Wofford Collogo, aftor stat ing to tho conference that ho liad sont an article upon tho subject of tho publish ing houso claim to tho organ of the church for publication, but which had not boon published, and that tho question involved was ono of current interest, now attracting groat attention through out tho ent ire momborship of tho church and boyond its limits, road tho follow ing: TI IK SUPREME DUTY CONFIIONTINO TIIK CHUltCII. For tho first timo in tho history of our country publio dooumonta by tho thou sands havo boon Bout out from Washing ton in which a Sonato committee, aftor long investigation, has felt warranted in charging with concealing, misleading and decoiving tho high officials, who woro representing a groat church, in a critical business transaction with tho government, involving moro than a quar ter of a million of dollars. Howover just our claim, its connect ion in any way, direct or indirect, with a record Uko that brings us to a distressing crisis iu our history as a church. Five-sixths of tho Tonncssoo confor onco havo pronounced tho conduct of tho agents "wholly indefensible," and call for un "unqualified disavowal" "of thoir conduct" on tho part of tho church. Tho main roforonco is to tho telegrams of March 8th. It may bo proper in ovory way to givo tho words of Dr. Collins Donny (a member of tho former, and chairman of tho present book committee) to tho Sonato committee. Roforring to tho second telegram, ho said: "Whon I first beard of it I said to tho agents, It is not a telegram that you should have sont, it will mislead tho man who got it." Raising no quest ion now as to their in tention, those tolograms, under tho cir cumstances, woro calculated to mislead. If the agents had wished to mislead, oven to decoivo, tho tolograms actually sent would havo sorvod thoir purpose vory well, without tho chango of a word. Senators say thoy woro decoived. This raises no question, in my mind, as to their intelligence, sincority or honor. Leaving tho doop question of motives to bo judged by clinrity, it is within safe limits to mako a painful statement: Whether from basto, inattention, in oxporlonco, or with purpose, our agonts wont dangerously near tho lino, whore intentional concealment becomos inten tional decoption. It will not bo safo for the church to approvo that venturo, ac tively or passively.
