Tho Lesson ls Plain.
It has boon stated that because of I
tho low prices at whioh the farmer
can procure tho things ho has to buy I
ho is bottor off despito the fact that
ho gets so littlo for his cotton, but
this has boon offeotivoly and convino
bigly answered os follows in tho Au
gusta Chroniolo : Suppose a farmer's
cotton costs him 5 cents a pound to
make it, and ho sells it for 8 cents.
Ho has 8 cents a pound profit with
which to buy his sugar, coffee, cloth
ing, shoeB and othor necessities.
Now suppose that, though it costs
him 5 cents to make it, ho only gets
4 cents a pound for it. Instead of
having a balance to spend, ho has
lost monoy on his your's work. No\
what docs it matter to tho farmer
who has not made a cont, whethor
sugar, shoes, household goods, cloth
ing, etc., aro cheaper than thoy wore
a few years ago, if he has nothing
with which to buy them ? ' This is
not a fancy sketch, but is the prob
lem that confronts many a farmer
to day. Here is a statement from
an intelligent young man in Jefferson
county who keeps books on bis farm
ing operations. It is the experience
of a white tenant.
Kented a 2-horso farm - - $ 40 75
Paid for fertilizers - - - 50 00
Hire and board of 1 hand - 97 00
Necessary family expenses
and taxes ... - 64 00
Necessary farm expenses,
ginning,bagging, ties, cte 88 15
$289 55
Received for all products on
farm.$288 37
Balance lo loss account - - $ 1 75
This is rather a discouraging result
of a year's labor. It does not ufatter
much to him that sugar, shoes, furni
ture And clothing are cheaper than over
before. Wherewithal! has ho to 1 /?
It is stated by the gentleman who
furnished us these ligures that the
tenant is a thrifty, industrious man,
and in addition to laboring himself,
two othor members of his family
worked on tho farm. There are six
in the family to clotho and shoe, etc.,
and there were doctor's bills $7.00
and taxes $2.40. Take thpco amounts
from tho amounts charged to "neces
sary family expenses," and ono can
judge whether tho expenditures of]
this family of six persons wero extra
vagant or not. When such is the
experience of an intelligent, indus
trious and economical family, in
which every effort was made to make
both ends meet, it is easy to seo how
much worse it was with a largo per
centage who ave shiftless and who
kept no amount of expenditures or
cost. It is a bad stato of affairs, and
all talk about 4 cent cotton not hurt
ing tho Southern.planter is simply
talk and nothing more. In tho
abandonment of cotton to a largo ex
tent and thc cultivation of diversified
crops, thc Southern farmer mus?- look
for redemption. Cotton must bo
raised in tho South, of course, and
must continue to be, hut the South
ern planter must raise his food crops
also, and must learn to produce cot
ton at less cost.

Di: AH Sm; What ia tho matter with tho
pooplo of your auction of tho country?
According to tho govornmont roports,
they koop On increasing tho 'production
of cotton when cotton ia soiling at tho
lowest prloo in,ita history. Why do. thoy
not divorsify their oropS? Cortainly tho
soil will . produco almost ovorythiug
which thoy consumo, and yet thoy con
tinue ra'al?g timi which is u drug un ci.o
market, and ' buying that whlph f'joy
ought to raise. Do thoy not realize that
tho demand for cotton is not keeping
paoo with tho increased production?
Kspcoially in view of tlio fact that other
conn trios aro increasing (heir production
of tho raw cotton. Notwithstanding tho
growth of tho population, it is evident
enough to anyone who observes, that
other materials aro taking tho placo in
which cotton onco had an absolute mo
nopoly. If ono ia in debt, it is folly to
attompt to pay off tho indobtoduoBS by
doubling tho produotlou of that through
which tho dobt was originally incurred.
Ono might ns well try to lift ono's self
over tho fonoo by tugging at ono'? own
hoot-straps. Tho n.oro you add to tho
prodiiotion of cotton, tho loss chance
there is of tho priCO of that commodity
advnnoing in the mnrkots of tho world.
Just so long as this ovor-produotion con
tinues, just so long will tho indebtedness
grow heavier and hcavior, and juBt so
long will your pooplo, struggling under
an ever-increasing burdon of dobt, ho
dissatisfied.
Tho romedy, howovor, ?B entirely
within thomsolvos, and is easy enough to
apply. That remedy is, as roforrod to
above, a diversification of orops. Wo
understand, for instance, that tho pooplo
in your section of tho country pay from
00 conte to $1 a bushel for wheat, from
00 to 06 couts a bushed for corn, from
$4.50 to $5 a hanoi for flour, from 71 to
8 cont? a pound for bacon, from 40 to 50
mts r. bushel f?r oats, from fi r.o io couts
pound for lard, from 40 to 50 cents a
gallon for molasses, 5 couts a pound for
ogs on foot, 2J couts a pound for cattlo
n foot, 50 to (30 couts a bushol for cow
peas, $1 a bushel for Irish potatoes, $1 a
nshel for peanuts, 40 cents a bushel for
sweet potatoes, and from $12 to $14 a ton
for hay. All bf theso things could easily
bo raised, or obtained from tho natural
iuota in your section of tho country;
_ ct your pooplo go on raising cotton at 5
couts a pound and paying theso high
prices for thoso things which aro tho
eccssarlcs of lito.
Wo wish they could bo brought to soo
this thing in tho right light. Tho South
is not prospering ns tho West is prosper
ing, and tho reason is that they go on in
tho samo old lines, notwithstanding tho
fact that conditions have changed.
Western people aro happy to-day. Tho
writor of this lins just returned from a
long trip in tho West, extending aa far ns
Omaha. Thoro tho crops hnvo boon
good; prices have bcon higher than thoy
navo boon in years. Tho farmers havoi
paid oft' their debts to tho local store
keepers; tho intcroat on their mortgages,
and, in somo cases, tho principal of tho
mortgage thomsolvos, and have a surplus.
They not only raiso a surplus of products
for salo to tho East, to tho .South and
abroad, but t hoy raiso that whioh they
j consumo thomsolvos, and aro not de
pendent upon any other section jt tho
country for what they need to oat. Your
pooplo raiso that which thoy cannot
wear, for which thoro is.a glut in tho
market, and apparently absolutely por
I.ist. in refusing to raiso that for which
1 they havo to pay a high price, and all of
which thoy could produco thomsolvos.
