SBNKCA, November 29.-Ou Thanks
Riving evening, those so fortunate as to
bo prosont atStrlbllug's Hali, enjoyed u
raro literary and musical treat. Col.
Jamos T. Bacon, who, for so many years,
baa edited tho Edgofiold Chronlolo, oame
at tho invitation of Mrs. M. W. Coleman
for tho Onoo-a-Wook, Club and dolivorod
bl? looturo, "Tho South forty years ago,
i as aeon throu&h ?u old Man's Krapky
LKaloldosoope."
p Col. '-Bacon was introduced by Mr.
JOhu W. Todd, and proceeded to delight
hie hoarora with an account of tho "Old
South" in all its glory. Himself a
lineal descendant of "Nod Brace" (whom
tho rendors of Gen. Longstreet's famous
"Goorgla Scenes" will remember as ono
of its oharaotera) ia well-fitted to por
tray ante-Indium times and (heir splOU
? dor. Y.
In tho beginning, tho spoakor stated
that tho highest type of maunors and
character exists at tho South, where
anarchy is lean prevalent than in nome
other sections. He noted tho ox! remo
conservatism of thia part of tho count ry.
Tho looturo waa especial ly instructivo
to tho young. Contrasts botwoon things
aa thoy existed in IBIS aud as thoy exist
in 1808 woro vividly drawn. Sooioty, na
enjoyed by those in high lifo, waa grund.
Tho Southern lady waa compared to
Tennyson's Lady Clara Vero do Voro.
Booioty was dlvidod into fivo distinct
classes. First carno thoso in high lifo,
followed by tho poisons in genteel mui
dlo lifo, thou oamo ovorsoor lifo, thou
"poor buckra" and lost tlio plantation
negroes.
Tho old stylo palaoo was compared to
tho vory di li?rent form of modem arohi
tcoturo.
A pioturo of tho typical cook of tho
olden days v im givon. Thon followed a
graphic account of tho misfortunes un
dorgono by tho houoowifo of tho prosont
timo with hor fashionable cook.
Porhaps tho most amusing part of tho
locture wah that which treated of tho
modem slang. The speaker seemed to
doploro tho vory gonorol uso of slang
among pooplo of tho first Booioty, and
said in antc-bellum days it wns consid
ered atrooiously vulgar. Had a young
lady dmod groot a friend with an omi
sivo "hollo," sho would havo boon sont
immediately to an nsylum.
Col. Bacon is thoroughly vorsod in
musical loro and contrasted tho playing
of tho young lady boforo tho war, with
tho moro classical .-.elect iona which
ongago tho modorn student. As au ox
nmplo of tho muslo of tho times boforo
tho war, ho played Gottsohalk's "Last
Hopo." Tho rondition wns beautiful,
superb. Ho then gavo a clossio selec
tion from a Gorman composor. Two
Virginia rools woro playod and thou
carno tho stirring and popular airs
"Amorica" and "Dixie," which mot with
enthusiastic applause.
Col. Bacon, (luring tho courso of his
looturo, took occasion to urgo tho reading
of "Georgia SOOHOB," and suggested that
ii - i ?ion mid o? hoi rt k??p it iii ino fore
ground as a work of literature.
Tho proceeds of tho ontortainmont go
to tho town clock fund.
nu. MANLY's LAST DAY.
Bov. Charles Manly, D. D., preached

Tho congregations woro largo and sad.
Dr. Manly's last words woro tondor and
impressive and deeply moved his bear
era who for tho past twolvo years havo
known him to bo a man of tho most
saintly character. Nono havo lacked
words of comfort and oncouragomonl
from him.
Sorvices at tho Methodist church woro
called in in tho ovoning, when Hov. J. L.
