Baptist Stato Convention.
Tho Baptist Stato Convention convened
at Darlington Wednesday, Novombor
Suth. It is a largo and roprosontatlve
body of Christian workers and' will deal
this wook with matters of nntoh impor
tance. A now board of twonty-fe?r
trustoos for Furman Uuiyorslty will bo
elected, nud notion will bo taken looking
to the improvomont of this worthy insti
tution. It is also expected that tho fight
against Suporintondout J. L. Yass, of
tho Connio Maxwell Orphanago, who is
charged with opening a lcttor sont out
from tho institution by ono of tho lady
teachers, Will bo renewed with a possi
bility of his romoval. Tho interests of
tho church throughout tho Stato will
also ho oanvassod, and altogothor a livoly
sossion is oxpooted.
Boclors' Mistakes'.
Many times women call on thoir family
physicians, Buffering, na thoy imagiuo,
ono from dyspepsia, another from heart
disoaso, anothor from livor or kidnoy
disease, another from nervous exhaustion
or prostration, another with pain boro
nnd riioro, and in this way thoy all pro
son'.. , alike to thomsolvcsnnd their easy
going and indifforont, or ovor-buBy doc
tor, soparato and distinot disoaso, for
which ho prescribes his pills and potions,
nssuming thom to besuch, whon, in real
ity, thoy aro all only symptoms caused by
sumo womb dlsordor. Tho physician,
ignorant of tho causo of Buffering, en
courages his "practico" until largo bills
aro made. Tho Buffering patient gets no
hotter, but probably worse by reason of
tho delay, wrong trcatuiont and conse
quent complications. A proper medicino,
llko Dr. Piorco's Favorito Proscription,
directed to tho causo would havo ontiroly
removed tho disease, thereby dispelling
nil thoso distressing symptoms, and insti
tuting comfort instead of prolonged mis
ory. This modioino enables a sonsitivo,
modest, woman to avoid tho unnecessary
physician's "examinations" and hts gene
rally U80I088 and stereotyped "local appli
cation" treatment.
Br. Charles Manly.
Wo havo heard with sorrow tho part
ing words of our much esteemed pastor
and friend, Dr. Charles Manly, ono wo
havo, from long find tende'* association,
learned to lovo as dearly as thoso with
whom wo wear tho chain of human tics,
and who foeis closor to us than blood
links withal.
Ho carno to our church twolvo years
ago with a mission of love to il and
charity to others, his Christian oharactor
being such that the confidence of all de
nominations was soon won, and ho was
pointed to as a leader in tho causo of
Christ that nono need four to follow.
Ile now leaves us for another Hold,
following tho footprints of duty at tho
call of tho Master. biko tho shuphords
of old, without doubt or disputation, ho
sccs tho signs and knows tho star whoso
beacon light will lead him to the fountain
whore blessing? oan bo secured and work
in tim causo to which ho has consecrated
his life found to do. With Christ as bis
guide and man of bis counsel wo feel
assured that an abundant harvest will bc
tho result of his obedience to this .sum
mons. No matter what tho sacrifico, ho
is willing to indure, yea to bo offered, if
found necessary, so it bu in tho causo of
his blessed Redeemer, in whoso service
ho never tires in laboring. We know and
feel that when the fl Ulli hour of atone
ment comes with him ho will be found
as he has always lived, at his post in
discharge of the duty with which bo has
been intrusted, and like the groat apostle
ho will bo able to exclaim, "1 have fought
the good fleht, I havo kept the faith, I
have finished my course, henceforth
thors is laid up for me H crown of right
eousness." .
Iiis hard to give him up or for our
short weak minds to seo the wisdom of
his removal from our midst, hut without
murmuring we submit, believing that tho
ways of Providence aro inscrutable and
past Unding out, and that this seemingly
irreparable loss to us will bo gain for
thom to w hom be goes, and wo know that
his prayers will bo for us, and that
heaven's blessings will be ours if wo
strive earnestly to press forward toward
the mark and prize of tho high calling
of Cod in Christ Jesus, where ho has
so long pointed us, and to which wo havo
boon (tailed, for wo know that tho Lord
doeth all things well and makes no mis
takes. When wo consider this, tho sepa
ration though sorrowful, yes painful, is
not an inconsolable lamentation, and
with bim who goes out from among us it
is a strain of triumph and au affirmation
to both that t he I.ord has a purpose to
servo and for him a special duty to
fulfil.
His life among us has boon BO puro and
undo!Hod, however, that bis departure
will indict a deep and incurrido wound,
not only in tho baptist church, but with
all tho Christian people of Son?oa.
The re will be one to fellow, a successor'
none can lill his place in the church and
still less in our homes and by our fl re
sides, for he has erected a monument of
good deeds here, there and everywhere
ho bas served which will bo more lasting
than brass and loftier than the pyramids
of kings. Wo may eultivato with zealous
caro and oncourngo with Christian grace
tho work to follow, possibly after n
while cheat ourselves iido tho belief that
all is well, but with somo.of ns, at least,
when with grief subdued, a token will
como to remind ns of bim who is far
away, and that WO havo hoon watering a
hoart where tho fair OS t flowor has been
plucked and tho newer or hitor growth
cannot lill the void.
Tho joy of having tasted tho better
things of life makes it much harder to
induro tho sting that always follows
deprivation, than if wo had nevor on
joyed those higher and hotter blessings
which fortune bestows, so tho
privilege of living under tho influence
of such a spi lit, elevating, ennob
ling and Christ like in his charac
ter, leadership ami example, will make
it peculiarly hard for us to be satisfied
. with less, and with our circumstances it
will never again bo our good fortuno to
lind another like him. His mission was
to comfort in sorrow and rejoice with us
in happior hours, all of which we have
long since learned, and which did not
havo to tako Miomsolvos wings and My
away to be appreciated.
Now, in conclusion, wo should, through
faith, endeavor to ombnico the promises
of our .Saviour, obey and observe with
Christian trust his injunction to take up
our crosses daily and follow bim, and
looking to tho silent and unkown futuro,
roly wit h implicit confidence on tho most
?iilpiunnivo and iiioiiiontous assurance
over delivered to tho human race: "Ho
that believeth in me, though dead, shall
live, and he that liveth and bollovoth in
mo shall never die."

In view of tho fact thal ta xes aro hoing

bo possible for tho Legislature to rcduco

Dr. Timmormnn, Treasurer of tho

other man in it. In sneaking on tho
gonornl aspect of affairs no oxprossod tho
opinion this morning that tho levy could
not be reduced, provided tho necessary
appropriations for tho govornmont aro
continued as thoy aro. Thore is no ox
travnganco in appropriations. On tho

Dr. Timmerman planned that tho

Octobor 8, 1808, and says :
"Tho Attornoy Conoral has rabid that
