CLEMSON, Ootobor 7.-When ono con
sidors tho political opposition to Clom
son Collogo as manifested during tho
rocont Stato campaign, and tho bard
times, tho magnificent oponlng this sea
son is romarkablo.
President Hartzog took no vacation
during tho Bummer, and spent tho timo
lecturing, corresponding, advertising and
soliciting, lu this work bo rocoivou val
uable assistance from many of tho pro
fessors. As a result tho president con
fidently looked for a largo nttondnnco,
but tho enrollment has gone far uoyond
his expectations.
Ry aotual count thoro aro dOl cadets
now in daily attendance. This number
does not inoludo thoso studonts who
woro rejected in tho physical and montai
examinations. It should ho horno in
mind, too, that Clomson, unliko tho col
leges located in cities, has a vory small
local patronago. With tho oxoeption of
a dozen or so local studonts, tho sons of
professors living on tho campus, tho
wbolo corps is boarding in tho barracks.
This puts Clomson far ahead of any
other whito collogo in South Carolina in
point of attondanco, and in that, particu
lar it ranks nmong tho first in tho whole
South. At this timo last year 250 stu
donts woro in attondanco. Two hundred
and live now students have matriculated,
and every day adds to tho nurnbor. It is
especially gratifying te ?am that fowor
of tho old students \..vo romainod at
homo this year than over before. Thoro
aro moro now students hero now than
tho total nurnbor at either of tho other
collogos in thc Stato.
President Hartzog has announced that
ho has room now for only twenty moro
cadets. Those who contemplate coming
to Clomson this year should como as
oarly as practicable to avoid disappoint
in ont.
As a class tho new students aro woll
prepared. Thoro are a good many
matriculates from other States.
Tho schedule had boon prepared dur
ing tho vacation, and class work began
tho first day of school.
President Hartzog is endeavoring to
arouso an interest among tho students
on tho subjects of manual training in tho
public schools and nature study in tho
rural schools. Ile regards theso as prob
lems of great current interest in tho edu
cational world. If theso ideas aro
adopted tho dei.mud for Clemson gradu
ates a? teachers will excoed tho supply.
Ho offers tho president's medal this year
for tho best essay on.theso subjects.
With tho largest attondanco siuco the
first year, with many improvements in
tho faculty, tho curriculum, tho buildingn
and equipments, Clemson begins her
seventh session under vory encouraging
auspices.

Mr. Maverick's intention to reserve tho
fourteen acres for a gravoyard. It is
mly a tradition. Now comos tho sequel.
Wo have a Sinking Fund Commission in
this State and it is tho duty of its agent,
Col. Gibbes, to bunt up obandoncd lands
md placo thom on tho tax books, and bo
lias discovered this land, and tho question
lias boon referred to tho Attorney Gene
ral as to whether all of this land hut a
mflloionoy for a gravoyard should not
bo sold and put on tho tax books. It
lias never boon usod for a publie burying
ground. Tho Nows and Courier, from
which wo got tho abovo information
iibout tho Sinking Fund Commission,
says that tho mother of tho present
Mayor of New xork was buried tiioro
ind. subsequently removed tb Anderson,
rbis is a mistake. Mrs. VanWyck is
buried in Woodlawn Cemetery/ In Now
York, and tho body of her husband, Sam
uel VanWyck, Sr., was taken up koro
mino years ngo and placed by 1ior side.
And, furthor, tho body of Samuel Van
Wyck, tho soldior, has been removed
from tho Maverick burying ground to
this city.
