SKNKCA, S. C., July 2:5.-lloro ian
lottor received by Air. li. W. .lordun
from bis son, ?jiout,. L. W. Jordan,
Jr., of tho First U. S. infantry, Law
ton's division, now in front of Santi
ago, which gives some of tho hard
ships and experiences of our soldiers:
About Five Miles from Santiago
de Cuba, June 20.-I will give you a
short account of what we have been
doing from day to day and write a
kind of diary until I get a chance to
mail this. I sent a note on tho 2Cth.
Did not have time to write more bc
foro tho chance to send it to the ship
would have passed.
The Hoot carno off this part of
(mba on tho morning of tho 20th,
and tho Soquranca ran ahead to thc
point off Santiago, where Sampson
carno aboard, then 18 miles weat to
Aguadores, where they conferred
with Garcia, Rabi and Castillo. They
collected off Daiquiri, and about ?)
, o'clock on tho '?'2d the warships be
gan tho bombardment of that place.
After about half an hour a Cub,m
Hag was brought down and thc
bombardment ceased. Most of the
houses had been burned during the
night and 7f>() Spaniards had left for
Santiago.^ Had thc Cubans done as
expected, all would have boon cap
tured. The landing was made from
small boats and was quite dangerous.
A coral reef skirts the coast and
there is almost no beach. Some ran
the boats on the beach and waded
ashore. Others (I among thom)
landed at a kind ol' pier, where
tho break ora tossed tho boat
fifteen foot high and against
the pier. I expected to bo up
set any minute; some boats were.
Had 50 men in my boat and all got
out safely. Two wore drounded
during tho landing, which is almost
a miracle considering thc way the
landing was conducted. As soon as
tho First landed wo wen; sent as an
advance guard. Wo marched about
six or seven miles through jungles
ami over mountains by a narrow
trail ; had to go single file, as in
fact almost, all tho marching has to
bo dom!. I had been so seasick :uitl
eaten so little thal I was quito weak,
but stood the trip about as well or
better than most. Oh, I was glad
to gel ashore, although land did rock
and sway under me for three days.
We camped about one and a half
miles back from daiquiri. I was so
tired I could not, sleep much and tho
mosquitoes were awful.
I will not attempt to describe the
country and vegetation. Il is very
mountainous with ? lt-ns?; tropical
growth. There has heirn so far plenty
of good water, the streams aro clear
m a un tai n creeks and as good as any
one could wish. Tho jungles are so
thick that you cannot, see 10 feet
through them, and almost, impossi
ble to get through on account, of the
thorn bushes and "Spanish bayonets,"
which look like the century plant,
and cover the country.
Up at 'i.30 on tho 2!ld and off at
day through the same kind of coun
try, only on tho "royal road," which
is hardly worth tho name of trail.
We got into a cocoanut grove at 10
a. m., and borrowing a machote from
a Cuban, I cut into a green one,
which just filled my quart cup full ol'
juice. I drank it all at once. The
juice is wholesome and refreshing
and tho ripe nut, does not hurl. I
have eaton a good many. The man
grove is oaten hy the soldiers, too,
but I lot them alone, as it, is rather
dangerous. There aro lota of lime
not ripe yet, but the green are as
wholesome as tho ripe. I squeeze
two or three into my canteen and it J
makes the water quite acid. Did
not stay long at tho cocoanut grove,
but went on to Sib ?ney, whore the
Twenty-second and Kighlh infant'1"
and Second Massachusetts had pr
ceded and drove tho Spaniards oui,
capturing a largo quantity of wine
and rum, which, needless to say,
soon disappeared ; also captured two
railroad engines. Hero we waited
on tho railroad track two
hours in the broiling hot sun,
thou marched back half a mile
and went into camp at 1 p. m. <>n
tho edge of a cocoanut grove. I
was officer of tho day and when 1
got up at night to inspect tho senti
nels I waa so seasick I could hardly

stand, It rainod quito hard, too,
but I did not got vory wot. Wo ex
pected to romain nil day in Sibonoy
oud draw rations, but at 10 a. m.
orders oaiuo for tho brigade to go to
tho right and earry aid to tho.80 regi
ments which woro lighting on our
front. Wo marched about sovon
miles through thc roughes' country
? ever want to see and carno to tho
battle-ground at (> p. m.
ICight soldiers woro buried thoro ;
we heard "laps" just as wc left for
Sibonoy at darb, three miles off,
which we reached at 0.45. Wo
camped* at tho same place as before
and drew rations tho next morning.
The battle was between tho First
and' T?nt h If. S. Cavalry and First
Volunteer Cavalry (Young's Divis
ion) and 1,000 Spaniards under Cen.
binares. It lasted only a short time.
The Spaniards could have held their
position for a week or longer. They
had a very strong position, a high,
steep hill, with yoofl works and a
cross fire on tho road from tho hills
near by. They let the Cuban guides
and the whole regiment pass their
first lines and then opened up. The
most damage waa done in K troop
of tho Hough Riders, -whore the
llolchkiss mountain guns were, and
which was a rather elovatcd part of
tho road.
It was known that the Spaniards
held tho place, ns it was tho trocha
across which tho Cubans had not
passed for thrco years. Seventeon
of our mon wore, killed and forty
wounded. I heard to-day all of the
wounded are improving as well as
could be expected. Seventy-six
Spaniards hive been lound and
buried by our men, and a largo num
ber of wounded wore seen being
carried away.
A daily paper brought out of San
tiago by a Cuban spy says that Cen.
Linares, with 1,000 men, met and
defeated tho entire American army
of 100,000, killing 500 and wounding
700, but were forced to withdraw
for want of ammunition.. His losses
wore very light.
How eau they publish such things,
when tho advance of our army is
three and a half miles of thc city?
A Spanish prisoner said the Ameri
can soldiers arc funny people. The
more you shoot at them the more
they come. They are used to hav
ing the Cubans run when they fire a
volley into them, so when the Tenth
charged the hill on which they were,
I suppose the}' could not comprehend
what was happening. There is not
a hundred yards of the road over
which we have passed where a small
force could not have hold a very
much larger one. I cannot under
stand why they have not given us a
great deal of trouble. Scouts report
that there are no troops until you
get lo within half a mile of the city.
Wc got rations for three days on the
.Jillb and broke earn]) at I p. m.,
marching over the same road back
to where tho baltic took place and
by and past Sevill. , about six miles
from Sibonoy, where we went into
camp on a high bill. Wo stayed in
camp all Sunday. Karly in tho
morning, before if gol too hot, ?
went down to the river and look a
good bath and washed my under
clothes. Wouldn't you have liked
lo seen me washing and cooking:
Up al ?bi?d Oil tho 'JTth, but did
not gel off until fl:li?. Ii is a hard
job to move a division, especially
here where you march single lile most
of tlie way ami never more that two
abreast. We have camped at this
place, about live miles east ol'San
tiago, where wo are being rationed
and writing for tho extra ammuni
tion and the artillery lo be brought
np.
Thier wagons containing a bal
loon have just passed. 1 went out
with my company for outpost duty
yesterday morning and got back this
morning. There was a hard rain in
the afternoon, but I kept pretty dry.
No excitement at night. I slept
only about, two hours, but don't fee
at all sleepy today. The dew b
almost like a rain and the grass grow.1

Wc have,to carry everything on
our back. Wo havo no pack mules,
only a vory fow to bring up ammuni
tion and provisions ; not enough for
that purpose. Each man carries, in
addition to arms and ammunition, a
roll containing a blanket, shelter
(piece of canvas f>.\G), n poncho or
kind of rain coat and rubber blanket
combined, and a change of under
clothing, also a canteen holding two
quarts, and a havorsack, which is
quito heavy when it contains throe
days' rations. Wo have coffee, sugar,
hardtack and bacon, and after a long
maroh I'll tell you I have never eaton
anything botter. I have a splendid
appetito-in fact, I can hardly got
onough to eat, but would be glad to
vary it a little. There are a good
many guineas, but we cannot shoot
them. All this country has gone
wild again, as no ono has lived hero
for three years. There aro no cattle
around at all.
The Spaniards have rounded up
everything. Several of the soldiers
are sick from eating too many man
groves, otherwise tho health of the
army is splendid. I havo never felt
hotter j am pretty thin, but that's
rather an advantage.
Gen. Shafter and staff landed at
Siboncy to-day and have established
headquarters near hore. Tho roads
aro being built and fixed so that the
artillery can como up ; supposo we
will remain hore until the artillery
gels its position. I am battalion ad
jutant and also have some company
duty, as wo are short of oflieers.
Wo now havo only 14 for tho regi
ment. Scouts havo hoan to within
a milo and a half of the city. Near
ly every house has a red cross Hag
on it, the barracks, otc, and even the
block houses in tho line of fortifica
tions. ? reckon they intend to make
an unlawful and deceptive use of
them, and fire from buildings from
which they fly. At Caimanera they
they made use of a light house for
that purpose, for there is a kind of
tacit agreement among all navies not
to fire on lighthouses, but as soon as
they were sure the fire came from
these it was knocked lo pieces, and
so will all thc Ked Cross Hags. The
men are using rosewood for fire.
I shall sci.d this whenever I get a
chance, adding on as 1 keep it if any
thing happens. I am in great luck
to have a picea of paper about mo, :
as every little weight counts. Thc
envelopes got wet and are useless. 1
have written nt odd times all day
and very unconiicctodly, just as
everything crossed my mind. The
regulars got along better than tho
volunteers, as they know bettor how
to take caro of themselves, and so do
tho oflieers of them. Mut they are
all well satisfied and are learning
rapidly. Six thousand more troops
are lo come to-day. Cannot say
when tho final advance on Santiago
will begin, but it cannot bo very far
off. Besides Santiago is almost
without anything to eat, so wc can
starve them out very easily il" neces
sary.
.lune. ?IO-Up as usual quito early
and muster at l>.80. Moro rations to
bo issued this afternoon. Wo break
camp and move further in toward
Santiago some time this afternoon,
as soon as certain batteries come up.
lt is expected that tho attack on tho
city will begin to-morrow, so that on
ibo fourth Old (Jlory will almost .

sonally, judging from tho way the
enemy has acted so far, I do not
think there will bo much trouble in
laking thc city. Tho Eirst Infantry
is to bo tin; support of ('apron's bat
tery, and it will move forward about
two miles some time this afternoon,
and we go whore it does.
I shall seal this and try to get it
