Ho bas survivotl lo hear the North and South sing bis song together, and to sec tho soldiers from tht! two sections inarch side by ailie in one common cause to its strains. His homo is in Mount Vernon, Ohio, where ho waa born, and winne bc hopes to end bis days. Tho old man is a picturesque figure on tho. streets of the town. In bis primo lu? was one of the mid-centre dandies of New York eily, but now with calm indifference to tho conventional, lie usually carries a lotto staff and WOnrs his coat fastened in al the waist by a bit of rope. His home is a little col (tige on the edge of town, where be lives entirely alone. On almost any warm after noon ho can bc found seated before his door reading, but ho is ready enough to pul asido bis book or imper and talk with |.h{. chanco visi tor, whoso"*Curiosity to mee' tb" composer of one of the national and of all, tho most thoroughly native-songs of America, has brought him out from tho town. If was this curiosity thal took ?u to thc cottage. The old composer | was sealed in thc shade by his house, with a book open before him. As I went up tho path, I said, for I had some doubt in my own mind : "Are you Dan Ktninoll, who wrote Dixie?"' "Well, I have heard of the fellow; sit down," and he motioned to tho steps. "Won't you tell me how the song was written ?" "Like most everything else I ever did, because if had to bo done. One .Saturday night ill I Ko!), as I was leaving Bryant's theatre, where was playing, I?ryanl called after me : 'I want a walk 'round for Monday, Dan.' Thc next ?lay il, rained and I stayed indoors. At first when went, at the song I couldn't get any thing. Hut a line, 'I wish I was iii Dixie,'kept repealing itself in my mind, and li nal ly I look it for my Start. The rest wasn't long in com ing. And that's the story of bow Dixie was written, lt. made a bil al once, and before the end of the Week everybody in Mew York was whistling it. Then tho South took il up and claimed it fur its own. I sold the copyright lor ?OIHI, which was all I ever made from it. I'll show you my first copy." Me weill info the house ami returned in a mo ment with a yellow, worn-looking manuscript in his band. "That's Dixie," he anni, holding it np for inspection. "I mn going to give il. lo some historical society in thc South ono of these days, for, though I was born hore in Ohio, I ennui, myself a Southerner, as my father was a V irginian." Half a century ago Kinniel.) was a famous "nigger" minstrel. Those were the palmy days nf the binni cork arl, when I ?ry an t's Theatre on lower I broadway was oin-ni' the most popular resorts in New York city. Kmmett was born in ISIS, at Mount VIM non, coming from a family, all of whose members bad a ?neal reputa tion--still tradition in tho conn ty na musicians. In his nun caso this talent was Imf little less than a tu nde and undeveloped sort of genius. Ile began life as a printer, but soon abandoned lins t itule to join tho band nf a circus company. Ile was md long in discovering thal he could compose snugs of the kind in use by clowns. One nf the finest of these was "Old Dan Tucker," of pleasant if inebriate memory. Ils success was so great thal Kmmett followed il with many others. They were all negro melodies, and ibey all won popularity. Finally be look to negro imper Hoiialious, singing bis own songs in the i'ing, while bo accompanied him self on tho banjo. Ile made n spe cially of old men and ho has assured mo with pride, that when he had blackened his face and donned his wig of kinky while bair, ho was "the best old negro thal, ever lived." He became sind? a favorite with thc patrons of the circus in tho south and west, that at last-partly by chance and partly through intention -he invaded tho stngo bimsolf. This was some timo in 1812, nt tho old Chatham theater in Now York oity, whon, with two companions, ho gave fi mixed performance, mad o up largely of songs and da??os, typical of slave lifo and ohnraotor. Tho lit tle troupe was billed as tho "Virginia | Minstrels," and their popularity with tho publie was instantaneous. This was tho beginning of negro minstrelsy. From Now York tho pioneer company went to Boston and later on sailed for England, leav the newly discoverd Hold to tho host of imitators who wero rapidly divi ding their success with them. Emmott remained abroad for sovo ral years and when ho returned to New York joined Dan Bryant's Minstrel company at 47*2 Broadway. Ile was engaged lo write songs and walk 'rounds ?md take part in tho nightly performances, It was while ho was with Bryant that "Dixie" was composed. There h ii ve been many difforcnt accounts given as to the origin of this song, and hammett's share in its composition. The prevailing idea is that il somehow grew note by noto of its own volition and that ho simply wrote down-with a few ohanges something that already existed. As a matter of fact Emmott had just t he ono line, "1 wish I was in Dixie," for a theme. Strangely enough "Dixie," or "Dixie! tnd," referred not lo the South or any part of thc South. It was tho name of an estate on Man hattan Island, tho proporty of a man hythe name of Dixy, who was one of tho largest, slaveholders of his day, until the rapid growth of tho anti-slavery movement in tho North compelled bim lo sell bis slaves South. It was from these blacks and their descendants that tho wo "Dixieland" came, expressing their love and longing for their former home and master. The expression became a part of tho current speech, more as a bit of slang than anything else and soon lost all local significance. But a re ference by .lohn Randolph lo Mason's and Dixon's lines in ono of his ora tions, recalled to the public mind the memory ol* that suvvcy, and in some manner Dixie, perhaps from its fan cied likeness to Dixon, was given a place in the South.
