Directora of tho Walhalla Cotton Mills
it was decided to put in eighty-eight now
looms. This addition will take, up ail
tho available space in tho weaving de
partment for location of looms, and in
crease the out-put of tho mill from lf>0,
IMX) yards to about 250,000 yards per

farm. Tho clover Steward, W. II. Leo,
informed us that everything was moving
on nicely ami the health of tho institu
tion was good. He has eleven inmates
eight whiles and three colored. One
old negro woman says that, she is ins
years old. She is totally blind. Mr.
boo lins a good crop t his year, but th;>
recent drought, has injured tho upland
corn somewhat. Mas plenty of meat to
last until hog-killing time. Mr. boo told
us that, ho still had on hand about SHH)
bushels ol corn, besides having sold
about 200 bushels. There is also a good
cotton crop on tho place. This home
for ibo poor is more than self-suytaining.

17th of August next to take its place
There were other considerations which
moved the committee to this conclusion.

Jim Davis and Kiuily Davis, both col
ored, were br mght to Walhalla and
lodged in jail Monday night, charged
with tho murder of Sally Moss, thc four
year-old child nf lind ly Davis. Thc
charge is that thc child was whipped to
deal ii by them. Tho evidence shows
that tin; child's body was lascoratod from
hcail to foot. Its arm and collar
bono were both broken. The child bad
evidently been dead several ?lays, but
had not been buried. These two darkie.8
had been married only a few months
The woman had four children when sho
married Jilli, two of whom have died
within tho last month. Tho defendants
resided on tho Keith place, in tho fork

mitted Jim Davis and Kmily Davis to jail
last Monday, charged with murder, he
received information that, about three
weeks since, another small child of these
darkies had died and hoon buried under
suspicious circumstances. Tho defend
ants had stated that tho child had been
burned to death. Coroner bogga, with a
physician, proceeded to exhume tho body
and found thc chilli's neck broken and
tho back of tho skull crushed.

Deputy Marshal W. li. P. Corbin and
posse have been on the "war path" dur
ing tho past, week. On last Thursday
night on Changa and Kooky Fork creeks
a quantity of boer and low wines was
destroyed. The copper still had been
removed.
On friday afternoon, near Long Creek,
he destroyed a large copper still, cap and
worm, OHO gallons, of beer and a lot of
low wines. Arrested John byles on the
spot for working in thc distlllmy.
On friday night, about, half past ten
o'clock on Main street in Walhalla, they
captured two horses, a buggy and cari,
and twenty two gallons of liquors. Ar
rested M. li. Hopkins, bis wife, Ada
Hopkins, and W. C. Miller, who wore
in charge of the property.
On Saturday morning aboul ll o'clock
seized a sixteen gallon keg of liquor near
Mountain Pest.
An hour later cul. down some eight
