The long drought has at last been
broken by copious showers falling over
tho county. Wo trust that the rains will
do a great deal of good in reviving vege
tation and causing tho corn ami colton
and other Held crops to yield their usual
amount of fruitage.

Union, sowed five bushels of wheal Oil
old ground last fall, ami has harvested
01.1 bushels of good wheat from saiil
sowing. IL; has also gathered one hun
dred bushels of fine oats. Our good
friend has, therefore, plenty of food for
man and beast.
Charlie Johnson, colored, who escaped
from the chain gang in January last, was
captured by Deputy Sheriff ll, lt. Moss,
at Maycsville, Ga., last Saturday and
brought to Walhalla Sunday and lodged
in jail. Ile has about six months to
servo yet. This was tho second time
Johnson escaped.

twelve, a vivid Hash of lightning was
seen, followed by a loud report. The
bolt struck the Kischossor monument in

On Sunday last Kiley Mooro and his
nephew, Jerry Moore, got. into a (hffi
Olllty, on Kich Mountain, and Kiley shot
at Jerry with a shot gun. Jerry suc
ceeded in getting tho gun away from his
opponent and used it as a club, striking
him on thc head and face and bruising
him up pretty badly. Kiley's noso was
broken and his countenance otherwise
disfigured. Doth men were drunk. No
arrests have been made
Mrs. Barbara Burkholder died oi
Tuesday, July f>, at the homo of lier son
in-law, Mr. I. Coode, near Walhalla.
She was 87 years old, and hail been a
consistent member of tho Mennonite
church for tl? years. Her remains wore
laid to rest in West View como tory.
Mrs. Burkholder came to South Carolina
from Indiana in 1800 with tho family of
hor son-in-law. The bereaved family
have tho sincero sympathy of many
friends.

noon Dr. W. T. Stoddard mot with a seri

was to accompany him. and loading a
nowspapor, his horse, which was grazing,
got tho check roin ovor thc shaft. Tho
animal bogan to back, and Dr. Stoddard,

unbalanced and was thrown violently
ovor tho whcol of tho buggy to thc
ground, striking upon bis right kneo.
Dis back was severely wrenched and hie
kneo was badly injured, so much so that
the leg had to bandaged and oncascd in
plaster of paris. It will probably bo months
liefere ho eau uso it. It will bo remem
bered that several years ago Dr. Stod
dard met with a similar accident in
which his loft knee was injured in much
tho ?anio way. Dr. Stoddard had sufll
clontly recovered from this hurt to walk
with easo without tho aid of crutch Ol
stick. Added to this his general health
