Bishop Cyrus ]>. Foss, in his arti
cle, "Glimpses in India," in a recent
issue of tho Sunday School Times,
says :
Probably nothing more strikes the
foreigner than the omnipresent indi
cations of the poverty of the people,
a poverty so dense and desperate,
and almost utterly hopeless, that an
American can hardly conceive of it.
The great mass of tho people live in
wretched mud huts, huddled to
gether, for society and mutual pro
tcction) in little villages. They eat
but two meals a day, consisting ol
tho cheapost grains, and rarely tas'.o
?my animal food. The partial failure
of crops means death to thousands,
and the famine of thc past year
doubtless caused tho slow starvation
of several millions. As in all heathen
lands, women seem to bo thc chief
burden-bearers. I have seen women
carrying baskets of bricks on their
heads to the fourth or fifttl story of
a building, a hundred pounds at a
time, for live cents a day. A con
tractor in Madras told inc that the
common wages of skilled carpenters
and masons were from eight cents to
twelve cents a day.
One of the eh i of flights in Bombay,
which every traveler wishes to Bee,
is tho Parsec method of disposing of
tho dead at tho Towers of Silence.
Those an; situated on Malabar Hill,
one of them having been in use for
two hundred and thirty years. I
visited tho one. ch idly in use, in
which corpses are exposed, on an
average of three a day, to tho vul
tures. Tho tower is about a hundred
feet in diameter and twenty-live
feet in height. In thc inside,
about ten feet above the ground,
there aro iron gratings, sloping
toward the centre in th rei; rows-the
outer for men, the middle one for
women, tho centre for children.
These! gratings surround a well about
twenty foot in diameter, into which,
after tho vultures have done their
work, thc bones are cast. More 1 han
lifty vultures were roosting oil the
wall, waiting for their accustomed
prey, and scores were Hying overhead.

What a Mistake.
Some thoughtless editor away off
in Kansas casually observed that it
takes money to run a newspaper,
whereupon overy editor in the land
is down on him. Notwithstanding
tho long established fact that tho
running of a paper broke up tho
devil and exhausted all his gold and
Kilver mines there aro yet millions of
people who believe it costs nothing
to start and run newspapers. Oh,
no, replies one editor. What a lie,
says another. What an exaggera
tion ! What a whopper ? Money
to run a newspaper? Never! lt
has been disproved a thousand times,
says another ; it is a clean caso of
airy fancy. It dosn't take money
to run a newspaper ; it can run
without money. It is a charitable
institution, a bogging concern, a high
way robber. ll'Codfrey, the news
paper is tho child of tho air, a crea
ture of a dream. It can go on and
on and on, when any other concern
would bo in tho hands of a receiver
and wound nj) with cobwebs in thc
window.
It takes wind to run a newspaper ;
it takes gall to run a newspaper. It
takes a scintillating, acrobatic imagi
nation, and a half dov.cn white shirts,
and a railroad pass to run a news
paper. Hut money-heavens to
Betsey and six hands round, who
over needed money in conducting a
newspaper ! Kind words aro tho
medium of exchange that do the
business for thc editor-kind words
and churches, social tickets. When
you sec an editor with money, watch
bim. He'll bc paying his billa and dis
gracing his profession. Never give
money to an editor. Make him
trade it out. I Io likes to swap.
Then when you die, after having
stood around for years and having
sneered nt the editor and his little
jim crow paper, be sure and have
your wife send in for three extra
copies by one of your weeping chil
dren, and when she readt' the gene
rous and touching notice about you
forewarn ber lo neglect to send lf>
cents to the editor. It would over
whelm him. Money is a corrupting
thing. Tho editor knows it, and
what he wants is your heartfelt
thanks. Then he can thank the
printers and they can thank their
grocers.
Hut money-scorn the filthy thing.
Don't let tho pure, innocent editor
know any thing about it. Keep that
for sordid trades-people who charge
for their wares. The editor gives
his bounty away. The Lord loves a
cheerful giver. He'll take, care of
thc editor. Don't worry about the
editor. Ile has a chatter from the
State to act as a doormat for tho com
munity. He'll get thc paper, out
somehow, and stand up for you when
you run for oflice, and lie about your
pigeontoed daughter's tacky wed
ding, and blow about your big footed
sons wheo they get a %\ por week
job, and weep over your shriveled
soul when it is released from your
grasping body, and smile at your
giddy wife's second marriage. He'll
get along. Thc Lord knows how
but somehow.

When I was going up the wind blew
down my collar. I state this fact
for the benefit of those who may bo
blown up in iiie present war, so that
they may know when they are com
ing down, a vory important thing to
know. When I had gotten in about
150 feet of tho ground I saw my
saddle and pistols (they wore in
their hoblers) coming up. How I
ever got so far ahead of 'em I don't
know, unless it was that I started
first and was worse skeered. Well,
as soon as I got to tho saddlo I
jerked out both the pistols and
.cocked 'em, for I didn't know whe

who doubt tho truth of this story,
