The Spaniards last night attacked the
camp of the First battalion of marines
under Lieut, lt. W. Huntington, and
were repulsed with heavy loss. Four]
Americans were killed namely,: Surgeon
J. ll. Gibbs, New York city; Sergeant
Smith, Company D; Private MoCallgan,
Company 1), and Tri vate Dunn risby,
Company I).
The wounded were: Private McGowan,
Company D, band shattered, and tho
pilot of tho United States cruiser Mar
billhead, shot through the lc?;.
The bring began after midnight and
lasted until daylight. At times lhere]
was a heavy fusilado on both sides.
Lieutenants Neville and Shaw, of Com
pany I), with SO men, were. Oil picket]
duty all night, and wero attacked by a
heavy force of Spaniards. All the men
killed wero in this detachment except
Dr. Gibbs, who was shot while in camp.
The pickets held the Spaniards off until
released this morning. .

there have boon chartered, and without
hampering the coastwise Hims, forty-one
first-class steamships for transports on
tho Atlantic coast, four water vessels,
ono tug, three steam lighters and ono
steamer for the signal service. In addi
tion, extra contracts had been made for
supplies of coal and wi.ter at points j
where troops were accumulating. Tho
govornmont has now mado most accept
able cont mets for coal at New Orleans,
M obi lo, Tampa, Key West, Savannah,
and also tor coal alloat to follow tho
transports to Cuba and Porto Rico,

On May 13th tho adjutant general sent
