The large three-story frame
building of (!. M. Nield, for

were then on tor tai nod that the
scourge; of (ire would well-nigh
annihilate the principal build

largo house with some twenty

At this point it was resolved
to stop tho fast advancing col
umn of fire, if possible, and the
next houso, a fivo room cottage,
owned by L. N. Robins, was
blown up with powder and
dynamite. It had already
caught, however, and was
about one-third burned down
when leveled to the ground. A
crowd of bravo mon attacked
the smouldering debris and tho
greater part was promptly re
moved. This fixed tho Eastern
limit of thc fire. Had it not
been dono, in another instant
tho Presbyterian parsonage, oc
cupied by Prof. .J. M. Moss,
would have been burned ; also
the residence of Judge J. AV.
Hollcinan, just across Ann
street.
The only building left stand

Prof. J. M. Moss.

Tl.is plan was adopted at th<
suggestion of Messrs. H. E
Schroder and G. W. Pratt.
The members of the two fin
companies, the town and lin
factory, did all in their powei
to arrest the progress of tin
Hames. But when the lire onc<
got under headway, it. was s
herculean task to stay its pro
gross.
Before the hour of elevei
o'clock twenty-three building
wore burned and sevontoci
business houses destroyed. Th
total value of all properly cl<

ground. Ho was picked up i
an unconscious condition an
carried to the home of Sheri

sustained internal injuries, bi

The people of Walhalla,
this calamity, have been tang
a sovo.ro lesson ; hilt it is a h
, son that will not soon be f(
gotten.
Wo hope that it is a blessii

less than live years wo sh;

some fire-proof brick or sto
buildings occupying tho dei
lated sitos which meet our gu
this morning.
This is not the timo for nu

Tl io Cou ni nu forco, appre
hending tho desire of an appre
ciativo and sympathetic pupHo,
to say nothing of tho curious,
put their wits to work on a
special edition, and accordingly
this morning oui* readers can
seo and realize something of tho
misfortune which has befallen
the town. May such a scourgo
novor occur again. And it will
not, if we aro wise enough to
forego tho crowding of wooden
buildings and establish a well
equipped lire department.
The town last evening was
practically at tho morey of
wind and (ire, and this condi
tion should not bo allowed long
to obtain. Wo need water
works, modern (ire .engines,
hose, etc.
Let us go to work from to-day
with a determination not to
permit snob a condition of in
different circumstances as
caught tho people napping last
evening long to prevai'. At one
foil swoop more than enough
property ha? boen destroyed
than would be required to build
a complete system of water
