A HITTER WAK Iii .STOKE FOI: TUE O BEAT
PALMETTO STATE.
[Augusta Chronicle, February 13.]
"Yes, sir, the railroad fight now going
on in Carolina is very small potatoes in
comparison to the great whiskey war
that will bc waged at an early date."
These were the words of a prominent
Carolinian to a Chronicle reporter yester
day in the Arlington lobby, and the news
is significant as it comes from an intelli
gent source and from a man who travels
over Carolina as well as being on inti
mate terms with both thc powers that be
and the whiskey men too.
Thc sum total of thc coming war is
that the liquor men will refuse to give
up the traflic and the State will by all
means in its power endeavor to enforce
the law.
In the first place, the V "or dealers
will tender the usual license co the city
and town authorities at the proper time.
These proffers will, of course, he refused
and the har keepers, who will still con
tinue to do business, will bc arrested and
arraigned before thc courts and a verdict
adverse to their cause is sure to follow.
The case will then be certiornried to
the higher courts, and in the meantime
bond will he given and an attempt will
be marlo to still continue the business.
Just how much success will crown thc
efforts of thc liquor men tb circumvent
the law-makers remains to be seen, but
in any event the battle will bc a pro
longed and bitter one. which will have
much influence on the next gubernato
rial race.
The time that intervenes before this
battle is inaugurated will he consumed
in the railroad skirmish which is now
on. and over which much dissatisfaction
as well as satisfaction reigns in thc Pal-1
?netto State.
To-day it is understood that thc Port
Royal Hoad is making arrangements to
pay their taxes as demanded, hut noth
ing definite as to the truth of the rumor
could he ascertained.
Many of the roads, however, arc de
termined to tight the tax to thc end,
while Gov. Tillman expresses himself as
being equally firm in his intention of
carrying out the position he now occu
pies.
Carolina has certainly outdone. all
other States in real sensational pol?tica]
measures, and even Kansas has lost her
[ease on the banner State in these mat
ters despite her hordes of women politi
cians and party-starters.
Suicide of a Rnse Ball Player. I
GREENVILLE, Kel nary ll.-About 2
o'clock this afternoon Gus Haynes, well
known throughout the Stare as second
baseman of the old Greenville base ball
nine, committed suicide. For a day or
two he had been drinking, but not suffi
cient to attract any attention to bis coll
idion, as he was quiet and friendly.
To-day he spoke several times of killing
himself, but no one paid any attention
to it. He invited one friend to act as
pallbearer. At a quarter before 2 o'clock
lie went into the Canaux fruit store on
Main street, walked to thc hack part of
the store and said to a young man stand
ing mar him: "Teil everybody that I
love them." and placed a pistol to his
temple and tired. The bullet entered
the right side of his head and passed
through thc brain. He lived about an
hour, remaining unconscious until death.
The coroner's inquest found a verdict
with the facts given. Haynes was 2~>

Bronchitis
?."When I was a boy, 1 had a bronc nial
trouble of such a persistent and stub
born character, that the doctor pro
nounced it incurable with ordinary
remedies, but recommended me to try
Ayer's Cherry Pectoral. I did so, and
one bottle cured me. For the last fifteen
years, I have used this preparation with
good effect whenever I take a bad cold,
and I know of numbers of people who
keep it in the house all the time, not
considering tit safe to be without it."
J. C. YToodson, P. M., Forest Hill/VV".Va.
Cough
"For more than twenty-five years, I
was a sufferer from lung trouble, at
tended with coughing so severe at times
cs to cause hemorrhage, thc paroxysms
frequently lasting three or four hours.
I was induced to try Ayer's Ch<rryPec
toral, and after taking four bottles, was
thoroughly cured." -Franz Hoffman,
Clay Centre, Kans.
La Grippe
"Last spring I was taker, down with
la grippe. At times I was completely
prostrated,, and so difficult was my
breathing that my breast seemed as if
confined in an iron cage. I procured a
bottle of Ayer's Cherry Pectoral, and
no sooner had I began taking it thaii
relief followed. I could not believe that
the effect would be so rapid and tho
cure so complete."-"W. H. "Williams,
