will bo instrumental in saving tho

Who are not willing that the Slate

Tho representatives of all classes

who fought with Leo and .Jackson,"
will have a right to lake part in the

will bo no room in tho Conference
for Greonbaokors, Republicans and
Independents, and the Colored Alli

to be a D?mocratie Conference, pure

who aro trusting in thu strength of
Tillman's coat tails to pull themselves
into otlice, are not wanted. It is to

There are li? be no OUUOIISSOS or

popular public body thal has ever
assembled in South Carolina.

many of the best men in the commu

A Card.
OAKWAY, S. C., July Otb, 1800.
Mussits. EDITONS . 1 notice iu
your issue of last week a card from
J.J. Haley, of Oak way, pretending
to reply to my communication of
Juno '21, in which ho departs from
the subject tinder discussion and at
tacks myself and neighbors in a very
insolent manner by sotting out as
usual with falsehoods and abuse.
Now, if Mr. Haley had replied to
my nrtiplo and stuck to tho truth, I
would not have asked you to publish
anything further. Haley refers to
mo as Deputy Marshal, Constable
and so on in the days of Radical
rule. I do not deny holding olliccs
at that time, but I do deny being as
big a Radical then tts Haley is now.
I never went to Washington nor
Columbia to make pledges and boot
lick for the marshal's office, consta
ble nor post office, and so far as the
good stealing is concerned I think
Haley beat mc to tho place. That
was about the time ho was touching
a negro school below here, as he well
remembers thc good people were
about lo lynch him and he had to
quit to save himself. I wonder if
he gota chance ?it the publie money ?
If he did, that accounts for mc get
ting none. As to the <anons of dea
cons and so on, we i1 line to con
sider anything he refers, for we
WO'tld not be caught at Haley's fu
neral if he was dead. It is strange
10 me that Haley would say any
thing about Sunday caucus, when
everybody bas found out that he
does not regard tho Sabbath any
more than a hog. As to the Mon
grel Club, if there is such a thing
about here Haley is its daddy. Wc
Democrats belong lo the old solid
Center one hundred and twenty
strong for Tillman .and we have no
bears along on the line or amongst
the antis or .Mongrels. Now in con
clusion, if Haley was a man to be
believed, I would reply to what he
might say, but hereafter I do not
think 1 will reply through the papers
to any more of bis insolent charges
and abuse. 1 shall reply in quite a
different way from printers' ink, as
Haley is destitute of honor, truth or
morals that make a good man. I
drop hint for the people to consider
his case. W. M. BltOWN.
