About our present chief, execu
tive, Governor John' Puter Richard
son, there uro several coincidences
which are not only interesting, but
singulnr. His father, who was also
named John Peter Richardson, was
Governor of South Carolina from
1840 to 1842. This is tho only in
stance, I believe, in tho history of
our State where two Governors
have horne exactly tho same name.
Thc Governor who preceded tho
first John Peter Richardson wos B.
K. Ilcncgan, who was not elected to
that ellice, but was only in'.mg out
an unexpired term; tho Governor
who preceded the second John Peter
Richardson was John C. Sheppard,
who, like TTenogan was not -eleotod
to the office, but was also filling ont
an unexpired term. Tho Lieutenant
Governor under tho first John Pctor
Richardson was an np countryman,
Col. W. K. Clownoy, of Union,
whose first name was William. Tho
Lieutenant Governor under tho
second John Peter Richardson, is an
up countryman, Dr. W. L. Manldin,
of Greenville, whoso first name is
also William. Wo soe, thou, that

coincidences about the Governor of
