Capt. J. li. Sim ii k M n l'or a Trasteo of
thc Clemson Agricultural College.
It is probable thal tllC preseiil
Legislature will elect the six Trus
tees on the part nf the Stale as pin
vided for in the will of Col. Thomas
(i. Clemson, the Slate having ac
cepted the bequest for the purpose
of founding the Clemson Agricultu
ral College. There are seven Trus
tees appointed in the will, and six
are to be elected hy thc Stat?-, thus
making a Hoard of thirteen. We
would nominate as one of the six
Trustees io he elected, Capt. .1. L.
Shanklin, thc honored 1'resident of
the Oeoneo County Farmers' Alli
ance. Capt. Shanklin is well quali
fied in every sense of tho word for
this responsible position. Ile is tho
roughly identilied with the farmers'
interests and acquainted with
the farmers' need-. Having a
liberal education, his counsel in
the organization of the College and
its proper equipment, would he wise
and conservative. Our county is
united on him forker share of thc
honors in manning the institution,
and as the College is located in
Coonee, il would seem that she
should have at least one representa
tive on the Hoard of Trustees.
Those already appointed in the will
live elsewhere, Anderson, I'iekens,
Greenville, and other counties more
remote, heing represented. Oeouee
asks for only one representative, and
she is a unit in petitioning the (?cu
eral Assembly for the election of
Capt. Shanklin. Ile is a practical
fanner, having been such by occupa
tion ev? r since the war, and has also
represented our connie i;; :??i Sen
ate in ti most aieoplable manner, lt
is underst.I thal thc chances for
his election ate good, ami we know a
hotter selection could not he made
in the Slate hom ibc mountains to
the seaboard. We therefore look
confidently forward lo his election.
