against J. J. Haley, formorly post
master at Oakway, Oconeo County,
for intercepting mail mattor. Thc
mail matter in question was a lotter
alloged to have been writton by J. B.
Sanders, of Oakway, to A. M. Fol
ger, at Easley, in which he wished to
o informed whether Bryce or Bus
sell had tho 'ears of tho administra
tion.' By sonto unknown process
this lottor found its way into Bryce's
hands nt Washington, and boneo the
indictment. There was, howovcr,
no ovid?neo on which to proceed
against postmaster Haley.

On tho 9th instant' at Mt. Holly,
N. C. Prof. W. K. Perry, tho loro
naut, was making a balloon ascension,
and when at an altitude of 700 feet
tho gas bag burst, and with a didi
thump, tho balloon, parachute and
aeronaut struck the ground, falling
700 feet in ton seconds. The poor
man's first sign of consciousness was
a piteous ory for "Fisk, Fisk," (his
partner,) and then, '?Don't let tho
old woman know." ^Everything that
man could do was dono to aid tho
sufferer. Stimulants and morph ino
wore freely administered. He was
then placed on a couch and brought
to Charlotte on tho regular train.
In tho passage to Charlotte Dr. Hen
derson reset n dislocated shoulder.
Tho injured man was examined
last night by Dr. Graham ; his in
juries consist of a dislocated shoul
der, injured sido and baok, and a
broken rib, whioh injures tho lung
and prevents free breathing. Unloss
inflammation sets ill, the WOlllld will
not bo necessarily fatal. Perry has
made ovor 600 ascensions and lins
been injured but once before. Tho
parachute is the invontion of his
partner, I. N. Fisk, and has never
failed. He has a wife and twp chil
dren in Birmingham, Ala., and is the
only Southern-born balloonist in tho
