Wlahalla's Need.
MESSRS. EDITOHS : Thc good oitizons of every
placo should fool an abiding Interest in tho
financial, mornl and social condition of tho
locality in which ho resides. On this principio
I suppose thal cvory man who lives in Walhalla
not only desires but is willing to do everything
ho can lo advanco tho general prosperity of tho
place? Wei! ibero is ono thing wo ought to do
and ono thing wo must do boforo our town is
what its namo signifies-Paradise. This ono
thing, to which I allude, ia tho pulling down of
tho salo of ardent spirits. At present I give
only two reasons why there should not bo any
license granted for tho salo of ardent spirits in
tho incorporated limits of our town.
In (bo first placo tito w?lfaro of sooiety forbids
it. Thcro is nothing (hat makes a placo so de
sirable to a (ruo and worthy citizen as Ks good
morals and sobriety. In such a place au this
thcro is an atmosphere of purity, elevating to
all who breathe lt and desirable to those who
resido away from it. I am somewhat aoquaintod
with tho towns in our State and do not think
that Walhalla is moro immoral than others, yoi
I am afraid that if somo good man, prospecting
for a future homo, should happen to be in our
town nt certain limes ho would feel more like he
had gotten into a oounoil hall of evil spirits
than into a Paradise. It is certainly true that
nt times the pavement is blooked up by a noisy,
.tumultuous orowd of drunken men, whose tur
tiulenoy makes it unpleasant for a gentleman to
pass near, while their oonduot utterly precludes
tiie idea of a lady's passing that way. ?very
ono who has been much about Walhalla knows
that tho abovo statements aro true, and also
knows that tho origin of lt all is found in thc
exocssivo uso of whiskey. For if this poisonous
drug is put from us (hero is no more poaoeable
town to bo found than ours. Seeing then tho
ovil influences of the use of ardent spirits, why
can ?here not be a unanimous oonsont on the
part of our pooplo to put this out of the way
atubthus remove from us this great barrier to
tho progresa of good morals and tho purity of
sooiety? Wo are not only to take tho morals of
our grown-up peoplo into consideration in this
matter, but we aro to have an ey? single to the
proper training of the young. The child who
sees tho oonduot of drunken mon every day
soon becomes familiar with lt and no impressions
of its terrible consequences are made on his
mind. So when he becomes man, if he is not
a drunkard himself, his moral tastes will beoome
no vitiated, his moral perception so obtuse, that
bo will utterly fall to soe the evil to bo found
in the exoessive Uoo of strong drink and his In
fluonoe for sobrloty will havo boen lost. Follow
oitizons, for the moral good of ourselves and
d.iildrcn let us put this evil from our midst.
|3Ut a second reason why there should be no
strong drink sold In our town is beoausn the
prbipfKw*/ of our schools forbids its sale. This
question ifi closely connected with the material
prosperity of the plooe. Ours is a mountain
?own and x'feUf W ?Trronnd?d by on agri
cultural people tho nature of their produce ia
Buoh as* to raako our trade largely ono of barter.
Where this ls the caso, while tho people may
live well, they are not apt to grow wealthy.
Then if the material interests of our town aro
built "up, the value of property increased {and
our population swelled ia number, wo must look
to something else besides our trade with tho
surrounding country to do it. Tho wisdom of
our citizens has led them to tho inauguration of
a plan, whioh, above all otbors, is best suited lo
Inorenso the peace and prosperity of their homes.
This was the establishing of tho institutions of
learning whioh we bavo in our midst. Our
climate, railroad faoilities and nearness to tho
mountains, all combino lo make this a desirable
plaoe for the exlstenoo of publio schools, both
male and female. It is usoless to say that tho
fioanolal prosperity of this town doponds moro
or less on the success of our oollcgos. A moro
important question is, "On what docs tho
prosperity of our oollcges dopond? It depends
very largely on tho soberness of our town. Tho
President of tho Female Collcgo nt this placo
was heard to say that ho was nevor going to bo
satisfied until Walhalla becomo tho Athens
of the South. Not tho Athens of Qoorgia, but
the renownod, classical Athens of ancient
Greece. Many of us would bo greatly rejoiced
lo know that tho lofty aspirations of our san
guine President wcro fully realized. But before
this can bo tho use of ardent spirits as a beve
rage must be put away from our midst. This Ss
not Uko a large oily where the ovil influences of
strong drink oro lost t %hl of for (ho moment by
the onward rush of business. Hero it is seen
by all and nearly all is scon. Now it is not
likely that good men will send theil daughters
to be educated at a plaoo where their eyes rest
daily on men who aro Intoxicated and (heir ears
hear their bitter oaths and low vulgarity. What
has been said willi reference to our Female Col
lege will apply in part to Adgcr College. What
do men send their sons to school for? That they
may stand, in their hours of recreation, in tho
vicinity of a beer garden or a bar room, ex
posed to tho contaminating sins of those wicked
places? All know (hal gentlemen do not send
their sons to oollego for any suob purpose, nor
do they wish to send them (o a placo where such
things as theso aro to bo found. Especially
Will this argument apply lo all denominational
institutions. Such is Adger College. Our Pres
byterian friends aro not going to send their sons
in large numbera to our town to ed?cale them
if they know that during (heir wholo slay (hey
arc subject lo tho evil influences of intoxication,
and however good our reputation for sobriety
and good morals may bc nt (his time, if wc con
