Viow of a Northern Republican
on the Greenback Mooting at
Walhalla.
Kaw LONDON, CONN , August 15, 1882.
EDITORS KKOWKK Couiuuti: In passing
through Walhalla n few days ago I accidentally
heard thal lhere .would bo n political meeting of
the so called Greenbank puny, and gratifying
my curiosity to learn tho principles of (his
party, as promulgated iu South Carolina, I
therefore allcndcd this meeting on tho Viii
instant.
My knowledge of Greenback principles ns
announced in the North nud (he Impression re
ceived from this meeting convinced mo moro
thoroughly than ever of tho utter empli ness of
(he move Thc conduct, too, ot' those leading
tho movement is such ns lo convince every per
son of any thought nt all, "beyond a doubt,"
that (heir aims aro self-aggrandizement.
This meeting had (wo sides-a ludicrous and
a serious, lt uns amusing (o seo (ho party
which proposes lo take (ho place of (he Demo
cratic and Republican parties opposed by
gentlemen whoso only recommendations are a
loo intimate acquaintance with John Harley
Corn, which gavo them a readiness and a
faciiity lo draw oil' and put on their coats, only
equaled by (hose who aro aided by John Darley
Corn and (heir patriotic devotions lo their
country. Tho parliamentary usages nod
variations with which these gentlemen proposed
and conducted (he meeting were such as would
have done credit to "Pickwick's Celebrated
Club." They opened her "beyond a doubl,"
i li c ii "Iel her roll," and slio did roll under (he
oil repealed slang "let her rip" and "that is so
beyond a doubt, so help mo Cod," which grand
sentiments wire lustily and vociferously cheered
by tho darkies, who ought lo have been on thc
banks of tho Congo in Africa chewing thc shin
bone of a missionary.
1 have always been a Republican, except with
a few "slight variations," and unless there arc
many and great variations in (ho conductor Ibo
leaders of (nc Crccnbackcrs, Republicanism and
Democracy will ever be the only parlies I lint
will merit thc consideration of the people. I
therefore cnn "bul Iel her (thc Crccnbackcrs)
roll beyond a doubl."
There is however a serious view of this meet
ing by tho Orcenbookcrs. 1 noticed (hal (hey
have no fundamental principles growing oui of
(he constitution ns thc basis of their parly
organization. Their platform is made up of
rallier questions which inoro properly belong lo
thc consideration of (lie Democrats than to ibo
formation of a new party.
Thc questions of bank, slock nnd election
laws, education, &c, nrc mal lei s lo ba sell led
between Democrats in the parly rather man lo
serve as a basis of a new parly,
Tho Crccnbackcrs proceed from (he vicious
principio "All things lo all men in all places."
For Maine they arc prohibitionists. In North
Carolina anti prohibitionists, ?a Soulh Carolina
they oro opposed io higher education, in New
York tliey are in favor of holli common and
higher ?ducation, in Massachusetts they nro
in favor of qnnlitied suffrage, in South Carolina
(hey nrc in favor of an* unlicensed, unbridled
and unqualified suffrage. Their leaders have
colors equal to thc celebrated coat of Joboph of
the Holy Writ, nm! like Joseph's brethren they
nie willing (o succeed even if they have lo dip
their biol lier's? coal In thc blood of thc goal lo
deceive their countrj men
Some other 'Cincinnatiis'' will hnvc lo bc
called "beyond n doubt" from I lie plow handles

manned (his meeting.
