A Visit to Belle Meado.
This magnificent estate of over
3,000 acres is North west of Nash
ville, Tenn., six miles; thero is rail
road, thc Nashville & St. Louis
running through it with a station
called Harding's near tho mansion.
Herc resides (?cn. VV. G Harding,
thc most, extensive hrccdor of
horses in thc Union. His three
stallions,Great Tom, Enquirer and
Bramblo,aro so well known that it
would bc useless to describe them.
On tho 29th of April at his annual
sale, was sold 36 ono year old colts;
they brought near $21,000 cash:

wcro much admired. Milton
Young, Georgo Lorrilard, The
Dwyar Bros., Col. Bruce, editor
of tho Turf and Farm; Mr. and
Mrs. Charles Read, of Saratoga,
and many other Turfmen were
present and purchased largely.
Ono colt brought $4,500.
This farm is admirably adapted
for stock raising, a large portion
being in blue grass, lt was esti
mated that over 2,000 persons
wore in attendance on salo day.
Ample provision of barbacued
meats and barrels of butler milk
was provided tree and suff?ciont
for tho great crowd.
The General has a largo herd of
grado cattle, blooded sheep and
somo ton or twolvo Shut land po
nies, together with Angora goats,
game fowls and other fine breeds,
with turkeys, etc. There is a saw
and grist mill on tho placo and a
fino extensivo marble quarry, of
which tho pillars and steps of his
noble mansion aro constructed.
There, is the most perfect system o?
agriculture used here; immense
quantities of hay, barley, oats,
wheat and corn aro annually
raised amply sufficient to supply
his stock. Ho hus 80 thoroughbred
mares, that has never had u collar
on, or ovon shod; kept for breeding
alone and the General remarked
to me when I asked him if they
worked, . "doos Queen Victoria
work or bake bread or wash
clothes, no sir, if people wore ns
particular in breeding their own
progeny as I am witli horses, there
would not be as many bad men and
women in this world as there is."
There is a park hero of 400
acres with 36 acres lell in "na
tura?;" in it roam over 300 deer,
and bofore tho war there were
many stately elk, Indian and
Rocky mountain buffalo, but the
United States soldiers slew them
all, and the only mementos left
are the gigantic antlers whicli
adorn the outer corridors of thc
mansion. Tho grounds and farm
aro kept in admirable orber; most
of tho fences aro of rock,* a
beautiful stream winds along thc
baso of the lawn, and its eleni
waters rippling over the rocks
makes music for this aesthetic
home.
Gen. Harding is 74 years of agc
and is in infirm health; ho is t
genial gentleman of thc old schoo
and thorough scholar, a graduate
of the A. L. &, S. Academy, Mid
dlctown, Connecticut, under thc
superintendence of Capt. Alder
Partridge. He has written severa
articles ot high merit, on the sub
?oct of immigration, which wert
published in thc history of David
son county, Tenn. His son-in
law, Gen. W. II. Jackson, super
intends the vast interests o? tin
