The cotton crop in tho Western and Northern
sections of this county has beeu greatly injured
by the lalo cold spell. On many farms the
planters are speaking of planting corn In every
other row to moke up for tho deficiency in tho
stand.
Mr. Willis Moore, who resides between Wal
halla and West Union, has ono sheep from which
he hos clipped from seven io nine pounds of
washed wool at a shearing for tho past three
or four years. Who oan beat this or deny
that sheep raising is not a profitable business
in this country?
We have been favored with a cataloguo of
the Walhalla Female College for 1881-82.
There ore eighty-seven names on tho roll of tho
college as follows: Senior class, 0; intermediate,
ll; junior, 20; academic, lo; primary, 13;
juvenile, 10.
Four hundred md twenty-(Wo tax payers
have paid (heir (oxes up to and including
I Tuesday last as follows: Total collections,
$o,141 80, divided up as follows: Stato tux,

Our young friend Mr. Samuel D. Cherry, of
Seneca City, hod his evaporator at tho Fruit
Growers Convention at Atlanta. It was con
ceded on all hands that his fruit evuporalor was
the best and cheapest invention of tho kind at
thc convention.
Messrs. Joseph and Wm. Heid, thc former of
Chickasaw County, Mississippi, and tho latter
of the Argentino Republic ot' South America,
have been on a visit to their relatives and
friends in this section. They left this oountiy
in 1824. They wcro impressed with tho rapid
growth and improvement of this section. Mr.
Wm. ltcid bas been a resident of South America
for more than twenty-five years.
We received a call last wcok from Messrs.
\V. J. Compton and J. \V. Bailey, who aro
introducing "Uoncock's improvement in
Field Fence." It is a simple patent for.co

cheap and economical and will bo in demand

Tho Presbyterians of Seneca City intend

pose. Wc aro pleased to seo this. Already
tho Ephcopnliuns huve erected and dedicated
a nice chapel f r the purpose of worship.
Tho Methodists will nleo build there ofter
a whilo. Thc Baptists bare secured tho
largo commodious building put up carly for
the uso of all thc denominations. No better
evidence can be adduced of tho prosperity of
a placo than hy pointing to its numerous
houses of worship.
Mr. Christian Michalus, an old German
citizen of our. town, mot with a fatal accident
on last Thursday afternoon, as bo was going
down the steps of his daughter's bouso. It
seems that there was a small round
slick of wood on ibo Mops and as Mr.
M'chnlus started down bis foot struck tho
stick of wood, which began to roll, enuring
him to full with great force to thc ground.
The fall, it is thought, camed tho' rupture of
some blood vessel near thc heart, and death
ensued in six or seven hourn after tho ncciJ
dent. Mr. Miohulus was 79 years old and
cume from Germany and settled nt Walhalla
about 27 years ago. Ile leaves a wife nnd
several children to whom wecxtond our sym^
pathies in their sad bereavement.
Dr. Smcltzer has returned from Synod
at Charlotte. Tho Charlotte Observer, of
tho 30tb, bas tho following complimentary
remarks in relation to Dr. S.: "The pulpit of
Tyron St. M. E. Church was occupied Sunday
morning by Dr. Smeltzcr, of Walhalla, S. C.,
who has been in the ministry 32 years. Dr.
Smcltzer was for sixteen years President of
Newberry College; 12 years in charge of tho
Lutheran Church at Harper's Forry, Va., and
five years Pr?sident of Walhalla Female
College For tho past 1,604 Sundays bo has
preaohod and bas delivered 3,328 sermons.
