Puhlio meetings have been bold by both parn
S ties and addrossed by tho members of tho
Legislature and efforts aro being tnado to
reconcile the division. Fears of a sorious
split in the party aro entertained, but wo
hope, thoro as boro, that no division of opin
ion upon a maUor of this kind will bo per
mitted to divido tho Democrats and loso tho
State. *
Tho same question is being quiotly agir,
tated in this county, aud thoro is a wide di
versity of opinion as to tho propriety and <
ndvantago of extending tho law to tho North
Carolina lino, or nt least to eomo point above
Walhalla. Wo believe on a popular voto
tho opposition to tho stock law would havo a
majority; but among tho landholders tho ro
sult would bo doubtful, with a probability
that those favoring tho law would have a
majority. Tho ostensi?n of tho law pecul
iarly effeols tho farming community, and as
tho people ato sensitive on all such questions '
thoy should bo cautiously acted on, lest by 1
dividing tho pooplo wo should loso tho Stato

Wo holiove tho scll:ng prico of lands be

from tho ostensi?n of tho law. An exton- '
sion of tho law would likowiso prevent many ^
neighborhood difficulties, out off much ex- c
ponse to tho taxpayers from indictments for j
malicious trcsoass, and in a few years of *
trial would become both acceptable and prof- 0
itablo. Thcso opinions aro being ro?ltsod in
the growing feeling of acceptance of tho law, c
whore it exists, many of its bittor opnoncnts c
in our oounty aro now favoring it. Wo havo 11
found, too, that niuo tenths of thoso seeking
homos in our county profor to buy below tho '
stook fonco. As tho pooplo adapt themselves 11
to the law, they will bo stronger advooatos J^
of it and would opposo its abolition far moro ^
than they did its adoption. M1

This is our opinion and wc bcliovo thc peo* ftr

Thus far very fow of our citizens havo goao
to the Exposition. Wo presumo thal (ho main

crops and tho largo amount of fl'lhy lucre they
aro compelled to administer in tho sbapo of
cordials to hotel and boarding houso keepcis
while in Atlanta.
Tho principal part of (ho colton crop has
been gathered and it is ascertained thal (ho
yield is to some extonl bolter thou was antici
pated. About two-thirds of a crop bas been
tnado in this immediate vicinity.
Corn will be a short crop, but tho deficiency
will perhaps bo more than made up hy tho Im
mense quantity of bay that is being saved, mid
if tho people would only devinto from tho
habitual uso of ridiculous luxuries and usc
judicious management, I think this year would
not provo extremely detrimental after all.
