C. Cueb, of Chesterfield, and Capt. W. L. DoPase and Col. M illinm M. Shannon, of Camden, in thia State, culmi nated yesterday in a duel between Cush and Shannon, in which tho hist named was killed. DoPnes and Cash made arrangements to fight, but did not meet in consequence of tho arrest of thc former. Shannon was challeng ed by Mr. Ellerby, ono of tho parties to tho controversy, but tho challenge wus refused. Cash thon published Shannon us a coward. Out of this it is presumed tho fatal mooting arose. Col. Shannon was about sixty years of agc and universally beloved and respected. Tho duel took placo nt Dulioso's Uridgc, on thc border of Kershaw County. Col. Shannon, who wns tho I challenging party, fired first, his ball striking tho ground near Col. Cash's feet. Col. Cush then fired, his ball passing through Col. Shan non's heart. Death was instantaneous. Col. Shannon denied to Ibo last having reelected on Col. Cash in (ho legal proceedings which caused tho (roublo, and challenged Col. Cash on account of tho latter's abusive publication concerning him. Col. COLUMBIA, July 5.-There was a general obscrvanco hero to day of tho Fourth and partial suspension of business, all tho State offices and banks being closed. Thc forenoon was fearfully warm. About one o'clock tho city wee visited by a dreadful min, wiud and hail storm, tho damago re sulting from which was manifested princi pally nt thc Penitentiary. Thc usual rules aud regulations governing tho institution were suspended on account of its being a holiday. Superintendent Lipscomb had had collected in thc second story of tho new Machinery Hall, lately orected in the inclosurc, all tho convicts, except twenty one in tho hospital, and eleven women. At tho time tho storm arose 233 convicts worein thc second story of Machinery Hall, uudcr guard of tho usual detail. Without premonition, thc cyclone struck tho endo s?te, sweeping n woy the entiro third story of Machinery Hall, embracing all four walls, roof nnd rafters. The building was three stories in height, ouc hundred nnd fiTty feet in length, and fifty feet in width. Tho Gulf and Southern inland States show littlo or no chango from last year. Thc average condition of the crop is muoh bet ter than last year, and is 03 against 81 in in Juno, 1870. Texas, of all tho Gulf States, is tho only ouo that reports above 100. Tin general oompiaint is drought in nil tho middle and South Atlantic States; rust and too much rain in tho Gulf and Southern States.
