We had a regular old-fashioned thunder storm on Saturday

Wc loom that tho Methodist Church r.t West

As our friend. Mr. Cobb, tho sonp man won
say, I have nut had time; hut the most pete
reason is that lhere bau been nothing
write about.
I am sorry to report that our little bur
for the past six week*, has not sn^tiiined ?
reputation ns regards thc health of its i
habitants. Thero has been a great deal
sickness herc, within tho nbovc mention
timo, caused, I guess, by tho changent
weather we have been having and tho gre
quantity of iain that has fallen. Mr. Ja
rard'a little daughter Hassce, has been qui
ill for somo time and I cannot say that she
any hotter. There uro several others in tov
sick, but nono dangerously ill, and I hop? o
long that they will bo enjoying their Wont
health. Around in the country there b
ulso boori sumo sickness, consisting princ
pally of coldH. This is quito an unu.-u
occurrence for our littlo burg und, I guoi
that in tho cours? of a fow weeks, I will
able to roport it, "This sido up with care"
rogurds health.
Tho rains aro retarding tho work on t
farms vory much. Nu doubt they will can
our fnrinors to got Sorna? hut bohirid in piar
?rig thoir crops. The formers all soom to
doing their best and it rs to bo hoped th
thoir efforts will ho crowned with snccc
when they gathor thoir oiops next full.
A great doal of guano is hoing used
this portion of tho county nnd ns a' nrooRsn
consequence it will require n groat doal
ootton to pay for it noxt full. Somo of tl
farmers contend that (hoy cannot do witho
it. On this point I nm not nblo to oxprOHB i
opinion; hut it certainly doos appear to n
that moro fertilisers could bo mado at hom
with a littlo effort, than (boro aro., Wo lu
too muon oom, bacon, guano and flour ov
to suoccod well with farming. Tho abo
nnmod carry all (lie money realized from tlio
cotton orup out of tho country und wo will
novor have much money among us ns long ns
tho prcsont system is continued.
Tho rain last .Saturday night, tho 3d
instant, damaged tho lands and fencing a
good deal. A considernblo quantity of hail
foll, hut no ospoolnl dnmngo was dono hy it.
\ guess that the wheat orop in places will
ho a partial failure, sinoo it already has tho
rust; hut it is young yet and may not ho
damaged as badly as present appearances
indicate
I do not honr any grumbling from our
merchants, and tho only reason I cnn give for
lt is, that tho visits of tho drummers hnvo
grown beautifully loss within tho past year
and they huvo had timo to recruit from tho
overdose of talk which hits been bcrotoforo
adm i n i s tei eil to thom. A drummer is no
drummer nt nil unless bo can talk n ?nor?
chant into buying n bill of Roods. Wo hnvo
but one merchant that can givo nny of thom
a fair showing oil a talk. 1 Uko drummers;
they aro a.jolly set of follows.
I honr somo talk of May parties and pic
nics. Thora will bo a May party nt tho
Sulphur Spring on the ilrst day of May, and
tho picnics will bo scattorcd around over tho
community promiscuously. With an eye to
the forth-coming festivities, some of our
young men arc having buggies put up to haul
their "Spicy-nuris" mound in-I guess-nt
least I hope so-for 'tis commendable in
them.
Neither thc gnmo of filtcen nor any other
game will ever take precedence over croquet
herc. It is our National game and we will
not givo it up for any o? them. There is
some talk of ordering a new set soon mid then
our Fair Piny merchants will be happy.
Tho Baptist Church has just been painted
and looks much better thar, it used to.
Thc Fair Piny High School is getting on
very well. This (?osti?n*will elco thc first
of June.
Our friend. Col. ll. H. Mason, ba? done a very

Tho Stella phenomena, which will appear
in tho sky shortly, announces, ns we ure told
by tho Luxembourg Gazelle, an event which
may become dangerous mid destructivo to
tho enrtli and its inhabitants. Sinoo the
beginning of the Christian era tho Perihelia
(thus tho ?ppOfWrtnco of the stars in thc
neighborhood of tho sun is called) of tho four
great planets, Jupiter, Urnuut), Saturn and
Neptune, have not taken place at the same time.
Hut this event will occur during the next
five years, rind according to Pr. Knapp, who
has collected a mass of statistical mittet ?ni on
the subject, thc nearness of these planets to
thc sun, when occurring ?it the same lime,
lois beet; so far mai ked by great epidemics
and mortality. Tho views of astronomers
ure t i the efleet that when ono or m ire of the
great planets emiie near to thc sun. ibo
temperature and the condition of nor atmos
phere i" so disturbed, ilnii destructivo fluctua
tions, drondtul torrents of rain, lung oontin
ucd droughts, &o?, arise by willoh hnrrestii
are destroyed and pestilential ?pid?mies
produced among men and boasts. Dr
Knapp, while examining li."! history of the
great epidemics of moro than 2.000 yours
previous to our pre-cut time, hm found the
fact always confirmed that tho nearness of?
great plano to thc sun bas invariably been
followed l>y au cpidoinio Thus in the Otb
and ?Glh centuries ihre.} of these great
planets had disappeared near ibo sun, mid in
these periods at thc sumo ilma thc greatest
and most destructive pestilential epidemics of
the Christian ora have occurred. Hut soon
alter 1SS0, for the first time dining tho hist
2,000 years, all four ol those great planets
will at the same limo como into perihelion
so that probably for sever;;! year.?, yix: from
18N0 to IS?S?, the health and lives of thc
inhabitants t?f tho earth will be exposed to a
severo trial. Inundations, failures of har
vests, especially of potutoos, deadly fevers
among men and pesta among entilo ure
prophesied a*) precursors ol thc periholion ol
the planets. Wo do not mention Dr K. ,-p's
forebodings in order to distress anybody, wo
simply communicate fads, '?'hat the simul
taneous nearness to tho nun of all the great
planets of our solar system, ono of which,
Jupiter, is a thousand tiir.es larger than tho
earth, must en uso considerable disturbances
in our atmosphere and temperature, is possi
ble! that tbe.-e disturbances may be injurious
to health impossible; and that these astronom
ical phenomena have hitherto been accompa
nied by great epidemics, is proved by history.
