COI.UMIIIA, September 22.-Collector Bray ton received a dispatch from Spartanbnrg this afternoon which stated that special dup uty collector nnd United States Deputy Mar shal, T. J Davis was shot nt hnlf past 5 o'clock this afternoon by J. li. Panther, while serving a bench warrant issued in North Carolina, but which had been mad o scrvicca* bio in this district by Judge Bryan. Panther was shot in tho log by a negro, nnd is now in jail at Spartanbnrg. Davis's thigh bone was badly broken. ANOTHER ACCOUNT-PA NTH BR HAKES HIS ESo CA PE. SPARTANnuRO, September 22.-John B. | Panther was arrested hero this morning by S. J. Davis, United States Marshal and Spe cial Deputy Collector, on a bench warrant issued in North Carolina in 1878, and gavo bail to nppcar before tho Unitod Statos Court at tho noxt torin in Asheville. This after noon he was again arrested hy Davis on tho same mattor on which ho had given bond this morning, nnd Davis, being intoxicated, drew his pistol and threatened to shoot Panther. When Panther attempted to tako tho pistol from him it was discharged, tho ball striking and shattering Davis's left thigh bone. Pam thor ran nnd wa9 pursued by a crowd. Anthony llarvoy and Sam Herbert, both col? orcd, fired at him, tho former hitting him in tho fleshy part of tho left thigh. llarvoy nnd Herbert wcro nrrostcd and nrc in jail. Davis's wound is being dressed. It is thought tho leg may hnvo to bo amputated. Tho wholo troublo was cnuscd by Davis being drunk.
