assembled and by authority of the .same, That
a tax to cover thc period from January loth.
187 0, to January I Sib, 1880, for tho sums
and manner hereinafter named, shall he
raised and paid Into tho Treasury of thc
Town of Walhalla by thc first day of June
next:
SECTION 1. On each enc hundred dollars nf
assessed value of nil real and personal prop
erty, thc sum of fifteen cents.
SEC 2. Ten dollars a tiny by any itinerant
trader or auctioneer offering for eulo within
tho town of Walhalla any goods, wares mid
merchandise nt auction or othorwiso, to be
paid each day In advance; and every trader
or auctioneer so offering for salo any goods,
wares or merchandise at auction or othor
wisc, without having paid tho abovo specified
tax, shall bo fined in tho discretion of tho
Council each day ho may so offer: Provided,
Thc provisions of this Ordinance shall not be
so construed aa to apply to the ordinary deal
ors in grain, fruit, potatoes, tob?ceo, poultry,
ironware earthenware or othor produce.
SRO. 3 On each amt every keeper Of livery
or sales 3tnblo the sum of twenty tivo dollars
(or thc year in advanco. And no person or
persons shall biro or let out for pay in any
manner any horse, wagon or other vehicle
without paying thc following tax: Knoll ono
horse and vehicle, $10; each two ll or 80 and
vehicle, $15, this section not being designed
to affect draying.
SEO. 4. Deniers in liquors shall pay tho
following license, to wit; Kach retail dealer
in spirituous liquors $l-r>(); each dculor in
spirituous liquors, who sella by tho bottlo
and in quantities of a quart nnd upwards
$75, (tho liquor not to be drunk on tho prom
isca when sold by any other than n retail deal
cr;) each denier in largor beer and ot h er mai
liquors, not mau u factor di in tho County
other than the licensed dealers abovo men
tioncd, shall pay a tax of $25; and the
license for all dealers in spirituous or malt
liquors shall cover tho year ending on thc

tax of from $5 to $50 per day, in tho discre
tion of tho Intcndcnt, shall bo paid.

$10, and ton or nine pin alloys $10 in advanco
boforo licenso for using tho sanio shall bo

SEC 7. That each and ovory person liablo
to road duty, under tho laws of tho State,
othor than ministers of tho Gospel, teachers
of schools and students, shall work on tho
streets for ten days, (or pay at tho rato of 30
conta per day,) under tho direction of tho
Intondrnt or sonio ono in his stand, under tho
snmo pennlty nsprescribod by tho laws of tho
Stato for any refusal or negloct to porform
said work: Provided, That ony porson shall
bo permitted to pay, on or bofaro tito first day
of Juno, n oommunation of $3.

property, ns provided in Section 1, dinll bo
paid ncoording to tho assessments, returns

That in ovory caso any party shall havo tho

thc convenience of other persons intorfcrred
with, shall bo held guilty of n misdemeanor,
and punislinblo nt tho discretion of tho Coun
cil, within tho limits of their authority.
SEC. ll. lie it farther ordained, That all
places of business or amusement must bo
closed on tho Sabbath Day, with tho excep
tion of tho Brewery I'ark, which may bo kept
open after 1 o'clock Pi M., nnd any violation
of this ordinance shall bc subject to a penalty
of $25.
SnC. 12. lie if ordained. That any person
riding or driving upon tho sidewalks, or lead
ing ii horno or horses thereon, except to cross
tho same, or plncing any obstruction thereon
which may impede ti free passage, shall bo
hold guilty of a misdemeanor, and bc pun
ished nt the discretion of tho Council, within
thc limits of their authority.
SEC. 13. Jic it ordained, Thnt nny person
caught in nny act of public indeconcy on tho
street shnll bc guilty ol a misdemeanor, nnd
bc punished at tho discretion of tho Council,
within tho limits of their authority.
SEO. 14 lie it ordained. That any person
convicted ol' keeping a disorderly houso with?
in tho incorporate limits of the town of Wal
halla, shall, upon conviction for enoh such
ollcnso, bo fined rt sum not less than $25 nor
moro than ?30, and the owner or lessee of
any dwelling houso or other building, situ
ated within saul incorporate limits, who lots
or sub-lets any such dwelling house or other
building tn any portion or persons, to bc used
as a bawdy house or house of prostitution,
shall upon conviction pay a lino of not less
than$5 nor more than $50 for every day upon
which such bouse or building shall be so used
or kept, and to bo otherwise punished within
the discretion and authority of the Council.
SEC. 15. Any person or persons who shall
he guilty of fighting,- rioting ur other disor
derly Conduct, within tho corporate limits,
shall bc subject to a (inc or imprisonment at
thc discretion of the Council, within thc lim
its of their authority.
SEC. 10. It shall be the duty of the marshal
to arrest all persons guilty of misdemeanors
or lighter crime? within tho corporate limits
[if tho town of Walhalla, by violation of tho
laws of the State of South Carolina, or by
violation of any ordinance of the town of
