The marriage is the conclu* ion of a somewhat romantic story. When Taylor was nomi nated by tho Dem?crata as their candidate ? for Uongress, Miss Baird promised him that : if elected, she would marry him; if defouted j it would bo an hidctinitc time before their ! union. The district contains Home of the ! strongest Republican counties in the State, ! und bas always given ?1 Republican majority j of 2,200 or 2,800. Tho prospect for Tay lor attaining his desires were, therefore, not at all premising, Besides, he had an opponent in Pettibone, one of tho Republi can chieftains of the State, an emigrant from Michigan, possessed ot unusual shrewd ness. In the Presidential contest, us one of tho Republic MI electors, ho had horne the banner of his party as gallantly ns was possible, worrying the Democrats considera bly. For Taylor he entorta:nod seemingly nothing but contempt. Taylor's hornill - timi was simply a lucky stroke of fortune, lu the Republican convention, Taylor'.? brother, a very pronounced Republican, was tho principal candidate for thc nomina lion against Pettibone; but the hitter, after a bitter light, scoured tl c honor. The plan was carried out. Taylor was only twenty eight years old, and in that region had made con siderable reputation aa a fiddler.
