VUe Lecture of BIOD. Walter M. Gibbon, On Thursday Dight, of Inst weok, tho poople of Walhalla cnjoyed a plensuro whioh they seldom hnvo enjoyed. It had been proviously announced through the KBOWBB COUBIBB that on that night tho Hon. Walter M. Gibson, of tho Sandwich Islands, would looturo in tho Baptist Church. To moot this appointment, and to hoar tho distinguished speaker, quito a largo numbor of our poe plo gathered at tho church. Mr Gibson's reputa tion , made our citizens vory ourious to soo and hoar him, and thoy woro moro than ropaid fer tho attontion given him. When tho 'church was noarly filled, Hon. J. S. Vainer introduced tho upoakor to his audi ence. Mr Vernor,' in his introductory remarks, said that South Carolina had con. tributed moro distinguished and remarkable mon to tho development of tho now Stntos of tho Union and to tho now oountrios Wost? ward of hor bordore than perhaps any Stato of tho Union. Her sons had penetrated tho wilds of our Western torritory and had thero mudo now homes, now settlements and now States. Tho Sandwich Islands offered a romarkablo illustration of a wondorful civilization brought about by Christian influences. Ho bid his ? hearers romembor that about sixty yours ago, the kanakas, or nativos, of tho Sandwich Islands woro tho sorfs of ohiofs and priests, and govorned by frightful and abominable superstitions, and now tho sons and grand sons of those savages livod undor n constitu tional ordor of govornmont, had numerous well supported churches, had an elective Parliament, oxcollout sohools, an ablo judici ary nud plonty of newspapers. Tho political loan? lng of tho nativos was decidedly American, and no doubt should independence in tho Pacific bo impossible, of which nt prosont thoro Was happily no evidence, the kanakas of tho Sandwich Islands would profor tj idon tify their political futuro with tho groat Re public. The lecturer spoko highly of King Kala? kauo, who recently visited tho United States. Ho was a gentleman of superior cultivation, and gavo a cordial wclcomo to Americans visiting his dominions, and ho doubted not that should any South Carolinian visit his capital of Honolulu that it would bo no small recommendation to claim to be a compatriot of Governor Wade Hampton. Owing to tho fact of a royal court being hold in Honolulu, and that European powers sent obie envoys to represent their government at this court, and also owing to tho fact that maritime powers in tho Pacific mudo tho port of Honolulu their chief rendezvous, tho capi tol of tho Sandwich Island*1 surpassed in many respects in stylo and display suoh capi tals as Columbia or Richmond. Ho hoped soon.to 'seo tim telegraphic cable laid from Co Pacific cease to tho islands, and thoa wo ?would bo near noighb>rs, and wo would bo flashing congratulations or condo lences between Honolulu and Walhalla. It was curious to speak of a sympathy between places so divorsod, as those tropic islands and this interior mi?ntain country; but Provi dence having cast his lot thoro, and as ha still proser ved the tondorcst memories towards this old homo, whore ho bad passed his carly courting days, ho hoped to draw closer tho bond of svmpathy between South Carolina and thc Sandwich Islands, fl : did not want to tom pt any son of tho old Stato away from his nativo soil; but should any sock a chongo ho would be happy to aid him in tito islands, whioh offered a liberal row ard to tho endeav ors of tho industrious and the trustworthy.
