Allow mo to suggest that wo "tako timo by

I am of tho opinion that
"A mau convinced against his will

Tho Grund Jury of tho Uuitcd States
Court, at Greenville, in their presentment,
say;
Tho onforocoioot of tho rovenuo laws is a
matter of groat and spooial iraportanco to
tho people of this section of country. Wo
ure fully satisfied that their violation ie con
fined to a narrow strip of country through
tho mountains, and tho sentiment of tho
great body of tho pooplo ia strongly averse
to tho violations of theso laws, and that a
failure upon their part to afford active co
operation in tho vigorous enforcement of j
theso laws is chiefly ascribable to tho mis
conduct of some of tho subordinato officers,
who have been charged with tho dolioato
duty of making arrests and seizures. ?Some
of theso have boen discharged, and wo aro
informed that others will be; but wo desire
to say that tho ma re hal and collector can
not bo too careful in sclcoting mon for these
important duties, and should watch their
conduct as much as possible; for of all tho
officers theso aro tho ones who como most
directly in contact with tho people, and by
thom und their couduot tho coarse and
polioy of tho government towards its citi
zens is judgod.
Wo desire, in this connection, to express
our hearty approval aud commendation of
tho wiso und bonefioout policy adopted by
tho government towards this olass of tho
violators of its laws.
Wo trust that gralitudo and honor, as
well as a proper regard for thoir own iutor
Cits and tho wclfaro of their families, will
causo these men not only to abstaiu them
selves, in tho future, from all participation
iu violation of theso laws, but to exert
themselves actively to persuado and, if
necessary, to compel nil ottlers to do so.
Tho sympathies of a great many good oiti
zens, who would not themselves violate tho
law, have been enlisted on behalf of thoir
unfortunate neighbors, on acoouut of tho
hardships they havo sufferod, whether justly,
( or not. But, iu our opinion, tho magnani
mous courso of tho government should, and
wo boliovo will, havo tho immediate effect
of determining all good oitizons aotively to
aid tho Government iu suppressing all vio
lations of this law, aud will tend to promote
that spirit of obedioncc to law without
which no community or 'neighborhood oau
bo peaceful, prosperous and happy.
Wo havo heard with plousuro \hat the
commissioner of internal rovenuo has sent a
spooial and reliable agent to go through tho
rovenuo section of theso uppor countios to
explain tho law to theso people and encour
age thom to cngago legally in tho business.
Tho peoplo iu tho main who hsvo engaged
in tho business illicitly aro ignorant and
poor. They have not the means of trans
porting thoir little surplus of orops to market
to realizo oven enough moooy to pay thoir
taxes. To distill it, is not only profitable
nud affords a bottor markot, but oonvorts it
into a moro portablo form, nnd thosu con
stituted a great temptation to illioit business.
When it is oxplainod to thom that they oan
distill legally without inourriug au oxponso
beyond their moans, wo havo no doubt that
legal distilleries onough will ho established
to roraovo this temptation, and the govern
ment will get its rovenuo.
In concluding tho work of tho torra wo
dosiro to return our thanks to your Honor
for your uniform courtesy to us, and wo feel
that it is just cause of congratulation to tho
country that you sit boro to administer jus
tico in morey, regarding nliko tho right of
tho government aud tho liberty of tho oiti
zons; and wo sinoorely trust that tho effcot
of this terra may lesson your labors in tho
futuro, at least so far as tho internal revenue
work is oonoernod.
Wo are especially indebted to tho Distriot
Attorney for his unremitting attention and
officient assistance to us in tho discharge of
our duties, as well as for his courtesy and
urbanity, and also for his high logol ability
in preparing and dispatching the business
of this court in as economical a-way as pos
siblo.
Profano swearing.
There aro somo sins so common, that by
tho multitude they cense to bo regarded as
sins. In this catalogue may bo placed pro
fane swearing. It consists in using tho
naroo of tho Supromo Boing in an irrever
ent manner. lu tho third commandment,
it is oallcd "toking tho name of tho Lord
thy God in vain." By tho word "numo,"
as used in this commandment, wo aro to
understand nil tho titles and ovorything olso
by whioh God makes himsolf known. Pro
fano swearing does not consist in saying
something against God. This is blasphemy.
All that is necessary, in order to constitute
an individual a profano swoarer, is for that
individual to call God to witness trivial or
ordinary doolaratious, whether afllrmativo or
negativo; or to uso in common conversation,
tho namo of God iu an irrovoront manner.
In a moral point of viow, profano swear
ing is declared by God to boa most heinous
sin. This we infer, from the faot that in
tho third commandment it is positively de
clared that "tho Lord will not hold him
guiltless that takoth his namo in vain."
There aro multitudes of tho human family
who look upon arson, larceny, adultory,
fornication, drunkenness and lying os groat
crimes; but never seem to- think that pro
fano swearing is ns aggravAtod a sin, in tho
sight of God, os any ono of those mon
tionod.
In tho most of sins thore is some oarnal
ploiiBuro; but ho who takes tho name of
God in vaia gota no reward. Ho inoensos
hi? Makor and goto not oven a temporary
reward from Satan.- Yarku ilk J'Jtujuircr.
