Messrs. Editors: Leaving home on tho
29th instant for tho City dowu by thc Soa,
I havo concludod whiio I romain boro to
transmit n few of tho most interesting items
that como under my observation for tho
columns of your over fuithful COURIER.
Tho first thing that excited my admira
tion was tho very duo appearance of tho
small graiu orop ou my way to Anderson
Court House. Anderson County seems to
ho iu tho lead in agricultural pursuits of
any section I passed through, and thc indi
cation, tho present season, is by no means
an exception that such is not tho case. Tn
fact, tho prospects of whoat md oats in
general ucvor wcro moro flattering than at
present. Tho orop hos boon exceedingly
backward up to a very recent date, and this
is an indication that never fails to procedo
an abundant yield. Wheat and oats aro
naturally adapted to a cold climate, and tho
backwardness of thc orop, as in thc present
soasoo, only shows that wo havo had a cold
free/iug winter, which has kept tho young
plant from expanding itself at tho wrong
season of tho year, and consequently thc
soil is iu tho best tilt to maturo tho orop.
If tho season remains dry tho lurgest yield
over realized in this country muy ?ufoly bo
anticipated.
Ou our woy to Anderson wo also had an
opportunity of socingnnd hearing something
of tho results incident to fcuoing in the
stock, ??o. From what I learn thc chango
is only a matter of time to require it to work
harmoniously. As a general thing tho
croaking is among tho illitcato or misin
formed class, Reformation in any direction
ia always detrimental to our feelings ond wo
should always bo well posted on any con
templated reformation, that wo moy bo able
to bridge across tho incident changes, that
wo moy realizo tho ultimate result. I trust
this may bo tho case with farmers ot'Oeouoc,
and that tho new order of things mny bo
extended as high upas tho Air Line Railroad
nt tho meeting of our .Legislature this fall.
Hut of this moro anon.
On reaching Andorson wo found tho
meeting a fow days beforo hod been largo
and onthu8itistio. Wo wcro extremely dc?
lighted on getting aboard tho train to learn
that Governor Hampton would get aboard
of our train at thc Abbcvillo junction. A
largo crowd wcro assembled nt Hodgos
cagorly trying to get a glimpse of Governor
Hampton, and soon unmistakable indica
tions were manifest of his arrivnl by cheers,
tho waving of white handkerchiefs and tho
prcsonting of fbwors, until tho car was filled
with perfumo and tho Govoinor literally
surrounded with bouquets. Qov. Hampton
nos certainly tho observed of all observers
and every indication was that coming events
cast thoir shadows beforo.
Boon after leaving Columbia tho sabio
curtain of night put an end to observation
and wo spent tho way to Charleston in
oourting Morpheus ns best wo oould.
After reaching Charleston and strolling
through the central part of tho city wo rodo
up to Magnolia Cemetery, on tho st/cct oar,
and spent an hour in viowing tho city of
tho dead. Wo remained on tho ground
until sunset. There was a low gentle breeze
rustling among tho young foliage of giant
oaks, dod with thoir long mossy looks of
gray, a rich porfumo wafted from tho
thousands of flowers that decorate, tho loved
ones whoso last resting plaocaaro marked by
artistio and costly monumonts, tho gentle
anthems of tho spring birds, tho meander
ings of tho scrpontiuo, having its glossy
waters ever and anon rippled by tho finny
raoo whioh inhabit it, whilo tho shadows
grow-long by tho sotting sun, forma a pioturo
too poneivo and too cnohauting for descrip
tion.
Charleston has tito boat market in thc
South, if not in tho United Staten. ' I
visited tho vogetablo gardens (or Holds
rather) that not only supplies tho Charles-'
ton market, but furnishes immonso quanti
ties pf carly vegetables and fruits for tho
North; and no small amount of gain is
obtained from th?so shipments of vegeta
bios. Ono farm has 19 aorcs devoted to
strawberries, and Irish potatoes and other
vcgctablo products aro ns extensively culti
vated as strawl 'vries. I was informed that
from tho largest farms in strawberries fivoto
eight thousand dollars had been realized
per annum. 1 saw as many os 20 hands in
one field picking strawberries. Tho hands
get lt cents por quart for pichi tig. I saw
yam vines 12 inches long. Thoy hod been
propagated iu a hot house bcd. but woro
transplanted.
Tho next place of interest that I visited
is tho Battory or Whito Point Garden. It
is a kind of substituto for a park. Hero
thc oyo rests on old ocean's immensity. Tho
ship masts along tho wharves, tho Iorgo sail
ing VCRSOIS moving nloug Uko a "thing of
lifo," Port Sumter, Gustie Piuknoy, Mount
Pleasant and Sullivau's Island, with their
historic fame, forms another pioturepquo
Hectic that can better bo imagined than do
scribed.
Tho next placo I visited was Sullivan's
Island. Myself and several friends repaired
to tho Sullivan Island Perry landing ?nd
fouud tho samo boat, "Pocoain," flying as
in days of yore that "tried mon's souls,"
and soon wo wero enjoying "lifo on thc
ocean wavo." But when wo readied terra
firma how changed! Every houso on tho
island was destroyed during thc war; but u
better stylo of houses havo been erected and
thc buildings have been extended higher up
thnn before tho war. I saw but oue thing
that was not changed by tho ruthless hand
of war, ui.d that was tho wily chieftain's
last resting plaoc marked by a marblo Blab
with this inscription, "Osceola."
Aud lust but not least of tho Queen City
of tho South's points of interest I shall
uotico its artesian wells. Thu old well is
1,250 foot deep, strongly impregnated with
soda and other minerals and highly rcoom
uioudcd as a medicated bu th. The Charles
ton Hotel uses it, and comfortable bathing
houses aro fitted up by tho City Council,
and tunny resort thither lo bathe. I have
no mora faith iu medicated baths than I
havo in pills and potions; but of its deter
gent qualities any washer woman ought to
bo fa miliar, when it is known to bc strongly
impregnated with oarbonato of coda. Tho
most convenient feature connected with tho
artesian bath is its temperature, which is
78? Fahrenheit, and consequently is always
ready. Tho new well is 1,880 feet doep.
Tho contractor uses a steam engine to
pcopol tho machinery for bouring this woll.
Nearly two years have boon spout in
bouring this woll. Tho contractor is paid
by tho City Counrel 87 per foot, and tho
contractor binds himself to produce 100
gallons of water por minuto. One doy this
wook the shaft, or auger suddenly sank two
foot and tho water inoreascd from 80 to 140
gallons per minute. The well is lined with
iron pipe and as tho boring progresses tho
pipo is driven from the top and other joints
af piping added. Thc water rises with such
Toreo as to raise all tho gravel ns it is
loosened by tho augor. The temperature of
this woll is about blood boat (98?) aud
smokes whore tho water comes in contnot
with air, like a pot boiling. It is found by
cxporimcnt that thc tomperaturo inoreascs
Io o very 100 feet ofter tho first 48 feet,
whioh is tho sarao winter and summer, Wo
seo from actual experiment that tho sup
position that tho oontcr of tho earth is a
mass of molten lava, is bused on a vory
reasonable supposition. A few moro feet,
it is thought, will bo below tho bcd of marl
nod thc water will bo as puro as it is at tho
fountain hoad, and this is thc philosophy
why tho water is forced to tho top of tho
well, thc fountain head being the highest.
Tho United States Circuit Court con
vened on tho 1st of April, Judgo Bryan
presiding. Tho charge to tho Grand Jury
was pointod and explicit and 80 plain that a
"wayfaring man though a fool could not
orr therein." Eight coses oamo boforo tho
Grand Jury. True bills wero found in oaoh
oaso. Tho most important oaso was
against P. J. Murry for increasing throe
post offico uiouey orders. Tho Grand Jury
was discharged on Friday, tho 5th instant,
and Court will probably adjourn by tho
10th.
I forgot to notico in tho proper connco
tion, as wo skinunod nlong Uko n swallow

many verdant fields of oats, forming quite
an oasis in tho arid wintry appearance ol
tho cotton fields. I oould but rofloot how

Thc Sacking ol' Magdeburg.
TRANSLATED FROM THE GERMAN OB"
"SCHILLER'S THIRTY YEAHS WAR" DY A
YOUNO LADY OF WALHALLA-M. P.
Ou tho 80th of Marou, 1631, Tilly,
commander of tho Imperial troops, appeared
in order to carry on tho soigo with vigor.
Ia a short timo all tho outworks woro
taken: The garrison, wenkoncd by previ
ous contests, amounted to not moro thau
two thousand infantry, and a few hundred
cavalry; u very insignificant forco to defend
so largo a fortress. To supply this deOoi
ency tho oitizens wero armed; a doubtful
expedicut, whioh caused moro damage thau
it averted. Tho citizens being very ineffi
cient soldiers, by their disunion, precipitated
tho city into destruction. However, religi
ous fanaticism, ardent lov . nf freedom, and
unconquerable dislike to tho Importal name,
removed from their minds nil thoughts of u
surrender. They wero owaro of tho near
approach of Gustavus Adolphus, and (hat
a few days march would bring thc Kiug of
Sweden before their walls. This was not
unknown to Count Tilly; therefore, he has
toned iu any way ho could to make himsolf
master of J Magdeburg. Ho sent several
totters to tho administrator, commandant
and magistracy, demanding a surrender,
but received for answer that they would
rather dip than yield. Tho besiegers had
meanwhile approached tho moat, and fired
furiously from erected battorio3 upon wall
and towers. Ono tower was soon demolished,
but thc wall bad sustained very little injury
ami the hot shot whioh was intended to
sot tho city on fire, by excellent counter.
preparation?, was rondcred unavailing.
Tho powder of tho besieged was soon
exhausted, and boforo a fresh supply could
bo obtained, Magdeburg must bo cither
saved or lost. With cager longing ull eyes
woro turned towards tho direction from
whioh tho Swedish bannor waa expected to
oppcar. Ou tho 9th of May tho hostile
cannonade unexpectedly censed, and the
guns wero removed from several of thc
batteries. Poathliko stillness reigned
throughout tho Imperial camp. Every
thing contributed to convinco thc besieged
that their deliverance was at hand. A
great part of tho townsman end guards
forsook thoir post on tho wall iu order to
onjoy, after auch arduous labor, tho re
freshment of sleep; but alas, it was a dear
sleep and a terrible awakening! Tilly had
renounced all hope of subjugating tho city
boforo tho arrival of tho Swedes, by tho
previous method; ho therefore summoned
n council of war, which declared for tho
storming of Magdeburg after thc cxamplo
of Mastriebt, whioh lattor city was sur
prised and conquered carly in the morning,
while tho- inhabitants and soldiers were
wrapt in slumber. Four places were to bo
attacked at tho oamo timo, and tho whole
night botween tho 9th und 10th was. snoot
in making the nooessary preparations. The
r?sistance of tho hc&ioged was active and
obstinate; but four Importal regiments
finally mastered tho wall, foll upon tho rear
of tho Magdeburgers, and the conquest was
oomplete. Before mid-day all tho out
works woro overthrown, and thc oily was in
tho hands of tho enemy. Tilly planted
cannon in tho principal streets, causing tho
inhabitants to bctuko themsolvcs to their
dwellings, thoro to await their destiny. Not
long woro thoy in suspense. Tho soldiery,
rushing into thc houses, gavo full vent to
thoir unbridled passions. Soarocly had
their bloody work begun than all tho other
gates flew .opon, and the wholo cavalry
together with tho Croatians wero let loose
upon this most unhappy city. A tragedy
was now ouaotod for whioh history has no
lunguago and pootry no pencil. Neither
innocont childhood, helpless old ago, beauty
rank, uor sex had power to disarm tho rage
of tho conquerors; nothing seoret, nothing
holy, could escapo tho ovaricoof tho victors.
Fifty-threo women wero found beheaded in
a church. Tho Croatians amused thorn
sol ves by feeding tho fiamos with innocent
babes. P?ppcnhajm's Wallontuns speared
infants on their mot hors' bosoms. Somo
officers requested Tilly to put a stop to this
butohcry. "Como again in an hour," was
his answer, "and I will thon soc what can
bo done; tho soldiers must havo somo
roward for thoir toil and peril." Unintcr
ruptotlly wcut on this work of slaughter,
until smoko and flame onded these horrors.
In tho beginning of tho attack tho cnotny
had fired tho eity in sovcral piuco;!; now
oroso a storm of wind which sproud tho
flames with tho rapidity of lightning. In
less than twelvo hours this rich, populous
oity, ono of tho finest in Qoriuany, was
roduocd to ashes, two churches and a fow
huts oxooptcd. On tho 19th of May Tilly
himself finally nppoarcd In Magdeburg.
Most revolting was tho spectacle; tho living
creeping from undor tho dead; children
wandoring about, seeking thoir parents with
hoart-rending cries. Tho entire number of
tho Blain was computed to bo about thirty
thousand. Upwards of a thousand porsous
had sought refuge in tho Cathedral, whoro
thoy remained throo days and two nights in
constant droad of doa th, without nourish
ment. These Tilly pardoned, and permitted
food to bo distributed among thom. High
Mass was celebrated in tho Cathedral. Tho
Imperial General rodo through tho slrocts,
so that as nn eye-wit new, ho might report
to his muster that since tho destruction of
Troy and Jerusalem, no such victory lind
boou achieved.
It is an industrious mau who fully under
stands his own bobinoss.
