land got in plowing ordor by Monday evening.
Tho farmers havo been busily engaged this
week in uprooting and routing General
Greon's forces. At somo points ho is woll
fortified. Nothing short of Jaok Frost will
eutiroly destroy his army.
Tho woathcr is extremely hot this week.
Tho wheat threshers aro at work separating
tho wheat from tho chaff.
Corn crops in Conter township aro very
promising. Thc bud worm in some bottoms
havo been vory bod. Cotton is lino in many
farms. S. ll. Maret has ono field of vory good
cotton, and Major Prico says ho has 20 aoros
ot cotton knee high. J. W. Shclor has somo
very findtyo on an old worn out pieoo of land.

Tho Presbyterians will worship in tho

month, tho Rev. John B. Adgcr, of Pendleton,
supporting them. Tho congregation which
hitherto worshipped nt Nazareth, near by,
will soon move their church edifico to this
village. j
Wo havo had a mod dog, ono strayed from
a whiskey wagon. Ono or two bellicose eura
attacked it and woro bitten, but as yet thc
mania has not developed upon them. It rcnlly
seems ns il tho mountain fellows, despairing
of killing ont those of na who aro accustomed
to about "forty draps" with moan whiskey,
havo resorted to tho moro effectual means, if
possiblo, of dropping mad dugs among us.
Tho crop outlook is rather cheering. Up
land corr, is especially fino, but lato washing
rains did muoh dnmago to tho orop ulong
branches and creeks, and thc damngo in somo
places hoing almost equal to that produced
by tllO freshet last summer. It is believed
tho oat crop was a failure general ly. Wheft^
on thc contrary is universally good. Thcaron
in corn is considerably larger than that ol
Inst year. Cotton and corn aro well cleaned
of grass for tho most part and aro growing
rapidly. Corn in somo placos is in silk and
tassel and ootton blooms appeared very
generally on tho Inst day of Juno, ultimo.

that in 1872 two warrants upon tho Treasury,
or pay certificates, were issued to Carpenter,

.Columbia Daily. Union, for' respectively nine
ty-five and fifty-fivo dollars. It was lound
upon investigation to-day that oacb certificate
had boen increased to tho amount of six hun
dred dollars, a clear steal of twelve hundred
dollars upon two small printing bills. Car
penter apponrod boforo Judgo Marshall, and
was held in $2,000 boil for his appearance on
.Friday noxt, when ho will bo given an oppor
tunity to rise and explain. As it stands tho
evidence is conclusive. Tho committee is in
