DEAR Ent rons.- In tho KEOWEB COTJRIER for
last Thursday. I noticed an artiste cfndor tho
head of "Sauoca City Looala," about a friend
of mino, Mr. Gustavus ll. Johnson, now with
Dr. Hopkins, in Seneca. There is a story
connected with that young man's lifo that is
vory interesting, especially to tho Germans.
During tho Franco-Prussian war Mr. John
son agreed with tho Captain of a German
bark tu help him navigate his vessel across
tho North Sea from Norway and anchor hor
in E mien, Prussia. It was very dangerous,
for tho French man-of-* wars wore cruising all
ovor the sea. On tho second day he sighted
a largo Frenchman bearing down on him.
Ho was ordered to stop by a shot hoing
thrown undor his bow, but instead of obeying
the Frenchman's ordor, Mr. Johnson ordorod
all hands up to put on all the sails tho vossol
could carry. In a remarkable short timo all
was ready for n. moo, ho' himself taking tho
helm. Tho German flag was hoisted and thc
chase hogan. At one time it seemed ns tho
Frenohmnn would ovortako him, but oven
after tho mizzen mast had boca shot away,
he managed to escapo. A now spare mast
was erected and everything ni ado roady, if
they should encounter ano thor ono. For tho
next throo days all ROO mod f?t bo (ju i ot, but
on tho fourth and last day out from Erndon

for the bark. Mr. Jdhhson saw this timo
