STUAL.HVG AN ELEPHANT.
Thc beautiful lud?an village of Pot.tnwnto
mio, situated on tho Neosho River, in tho
Stale of Knnsas, was tho tbcatroof au intense
ly oxoitiug but wholly unavoidable occurrence
on tho night of Sunday, May 21. Tho mam
moth menagerie and circus of old John Rob
inson., which had exhibited tho previous day,
to crowded housos, to tho grant delight, won
der and astoniahment of tho uututorcd red
mun, was tho great contre of attraction. The
astonishment and curiosity wore great when
thc gigantic proportions of old Emperor burst
wpon their view. Everything passed oft"
queitly, and on Sunday evening, tho weather
and water being warm, Robinson determined
to let old Emperor enjoy the luxury of a bath
in the river, which is very frequent custom
among menagerie owners. Accordingly be
twecu tho hours of 5 and G P. M., Professor
Bud, tho keeper, was directed to bring bim
down to thc stream. Thc Indians, to tho
numbor of twenty or thirty, wero unlit ol
wutchiog tho process of unfastening the
chains which secured thc elephant with the
closest scrutiny, thc object of which will
shortly bo sceu.
Old Emperor mado up his mind to enjoy
himself, and moved on with slow and majes
tic tread toward tho stream, seeming to care
for uought but tho commands of his keeper.
As he neared thc bank of thc river, without
waiting to receive the command, he plunged
boldly in an began disporting himself with
tho greatest delight, rolling and plunging
from sido to side, sucking up great quantities
of wnter and blowing it out through his hugo
proboscis iu great columns, twonty or thirty
feet high, allowing it to fall in showers of
spray upon and all around him, tho sight
of which, to thc Indians, was truly marvelous.
After remaining in the water till dark bc was
conducted back to camp and secured for the
night, tho crowd in thc meantime following
and watching thc entire proceedings With the
closest inspection.
As soon as ho was unfettered and began to
movo, if seemed os if tho tocsin of war bad
sounded; from overy wigwam, but and cabin
thoro swarmed forth, young and old. ns strange
and fantistio looking a crowd of humanity
as ever was 3Cee before ; and it certainly was as
much of a show to tho showmen as it was to
the half naked crowd of savages themselves.
Tho wild and excited shouts of thc children ;
tho shrill aud discordant cries of thc squaws,
tho deep-toned guttcral exclamations of the
warriors and braves, created a bedlam of
smimis which novcr was nor can bo heard eul
abie of an Indian village.
Thc Indians slowly disappeared and sought
their wigwams for thc night, nnd thc tired
tihowmon also sought to obtain rest. It is
customaiy with all well-regulated menagerie
and circus oompanies, to employa man ns
watchman, and to him is entrusted thc busi
ness of awakening thc company in the morn
ing, to bo in readiness for breakfast, and an
curly start on thc road, and to his caro is also
committed thc entire cstcblishmcut through
the night.
About midnight thc watchman, wishing to
receive some information in regard to starting
in thc morning, stepped over to the betel
where Mr. Robinson was quartered, and
while engaged in conversation with him, an
awful, unearthly howl resounded through thc
hnlls of tho hotel,followed by n series, of groans
and screeches such as no mortal over heard
before. In an instant tho doors of thc differ
ent rooms wore hurriedly opened by thc ter
rified inmates, windows thrust up, and fright
ened fnocs looked wildly out.
Tho women and children uttering piteous
wails of terror, crouched coweringly down
near tho men with palo aud frightened coun
tenances, orying. "What is it?" '?Aro wo
attacked by Indians ?" Will they como
hero?" "Oh!" wo shall nil bo murdered."
The scene wns enough to make tho stoutest
heart quake with fear. Mr. Robinson, quick
ly comprehending tho mutter, sprang from
tho room and ordered evory mun to como out,
as ho was certain that some of tho animals
lind broken loose Upon emerging from tho
houso it wns first eupposod that, tho entire
villngo was on firo, for it was nearly ns light

V/hioll were blazing through the encamp ment.
Tho noise and din seeming to grow loudor
each instant, and being in tho Indian portion
of tho town, they hurridly made their way
thither, and upon suddenly turning a corner
thoy beheld a sight they will novcr forget.

Emperor, upon whose bnok was perched n
half dozen warrior?, shouting and gesticula
tingly to their brethren below, whilst nt in
tervals of half a minute a horrid yoll would
ring out upon tho nir, followed by huge col
umns of smoko and dust, and thon oould bo
hoard tho shrill trumpeting of tho elephant
aa uttorod when enraged or in pnin. On
evory sido lay tho ruins of thc once peaceful
homes of tho Indians.
As tho showmen wore propnring to rcsouo
Emperor,, ernsh wont his hugo trunk, and an
ontiro wigwam wns soon flying through tho
air, whilo from tho olouds of dust nnd hot; ps
o? rubbish could bo seen tho naked forms of
?orno half dozon squaws and children regain
ing oonsoiousnees, and darting away tbrough
tho woods with frightful yells of terror. Tho
soono was awful j the demoniac yells of tho
sovngos, tho infurintcd trumpeting of tho do
pliant, woro enough to strike terror and dis
may to tho stoutest heart.
Tho compnny, hoadod by Mr. Robinson,
rushing up immediately, spattered tho In
dian? from of! tho elephant's Dook and lcd him
away. Ho manifested his delight st finding

the camp. Amid the confusion it was iui

I from bis place of confinement, but upon ex
amining tho chitin it wus found to be unlock
ed, chowing that it was through tho ngency
of some misoltioviously inclined persons; and

certained that a party of young braves, noti

phant was, concluded to have a grand mena
gerie procession of their own ; und while
some wore unlocking his chains, live or six
leuped upon bis back mid two moro walked
on each side and steered him ulong, and thus
the grand cuvalcade started for tho Indian
quurter of that town, intending, no doubt, to
?rente u big seusuliun muong their brethren,
which thoy certainly did, though willi n re
sult fur different from what they anticipated ;
for, upon reaching thc first of a long row of
wigwams, bc discovered thc top of ono which
had been covered the day befbro with tho
long, sweet grass of the prairie, thrust out hif
trunk for a mouthful, when tho whole top
give way, and out burst tho frightened ili
lli des with terrific sereu ms, nud also scaring
the elephant at thc same time.
Tho Indians, becoming alarmed for tho
safety of thc rest of thc wigwams, commenced
goading him ?villi spears and knives; while
at the same time a hundred torches were flush
ed upon tho scene, producing the very object
they were endeavoring to prevent, for it not
only confused but blinded the elephant, while
the pain and torture of thc knife and arrow
wounds rendered him ti I most frantic with rage
and terror to such a degree that bo rushed
madly forward, dealing destruction on all
sides j und it would be difficult to tell which
party expressed thc most satisfaction in part
ing from each other's society, Indians or ele
phant.
Old Emperor was purchased from tho
King of Siam, and has been in this country
on exhibition for about thirty years. Ho is
known to all showmen as being thc best dis
positioncd elephant in tho United States,
never having been known to injure any living
oren tu re. The Indians noticing how very
gentle bo was, were not slow to take udvun
t.igc of his docility and good nature.
Tho Western Indian is noted for bis thiov
ing propensity, but history has no record of
their endeavoring to pilfer so large un unimal
before, although their disposition was good
enough to attempt it. Hut they have tho
consolation of knowing that they are not tb'J
first showmen that started out and ''busted
Mr. Robinson immediately sent for thc
chief to endeavor' to conciliate him, and tc
remunerate those who bad lost their dwelling?
by thc unfortunate occurrence.
Upon thc arrival of that dignitary, lie quick'
ly made known his wishes, when the chiel
immediately replied that the "father of al
animals," as he termed tho elephant, "was
uot to blame, but that thc blame rested upoi
his young men who had unfastened old Km
pcror, for which they were very sorry, une
hoped Mr. Robinson would forgive them ; mu
now, as no one had been killed-only vcr;
badly scared-bo did not think it right tba
thc "father of all animals" should bc nindi
to pay anything, although nineteen wigwam
were destroyed."
Old Emperor appears to be particular!
unfortunate in adventures. Winter befor
lust, while traveling in the South, he bad
terrific combat with alligators in a Florid
Swamp, whero he succeeded in saving tb
