?Erial Trip Over Luke Michigan.
Professor Steiuer, who iniulo a balloon as
cension in Milwaukee ou tho 'itli, and passed
Over Lake Michigan, gives an account of bis
trip, which is published in tho Milwaukee
News, in tho following shape i
At quarter past six tho ascent wau made,
tho balloon going north of tho Cathedral,
dearing tho steeple by about fifty feet, lu
. fifteen minutes un elevation of 5,000 feet was
\ gained, when the ascent became moro gradual.
At this time tho balloon was some two miles
out over tho Lake. Hero a most magnificent
view was spread out beneath tho delighted
eye of tho intrepid voyager.
Thc coast was visible for fifty miles in
cither direction ; all thc villages aud lakes in
tho interior wero spread out behind him,
while beforo him tho vast expanse of the lako
stretched away till tho horizon terminated
tho view. Tho thermometer indicated a tem
pera turo of forty degrees Tho current in
which the journey was begun was of thc ra
pidity of about thirty miles an hour. This
held good for some thirty miles, when thc
barometer showed an elevation of 10.OOO
foot. At this point, and at thia tremendous
height, both shores of tho lake were visible
for 100 miles in either direction Tho sun
wss fust siuking in thr west, and tho view
Yves beautiful in the extreme.
Hore, for over an hour, nt an elevation of
12,000 feet, tho current, which had been
tarrying thc balloon to a little south of Grand
Havan, died out, aud thc balloon was complete
ly bcc.alm.cd, not moving a mile in that time.
Forty-eight vessels were counted moving in
all directions. The stillness was most intonso.
Tho Professor says that in all his experience
ho never beforo had realized such perfect
quiet. Not wishing to remain all night over
tho Uko, a decent lt) an elevation of some
5,000 feet was made, with the view of contin
uing it to tho ty?ter and being picked up by
some vessel in caso no current was found,
thc car of the balloon being a complete life
preserver. At thc height mentioned a cur
rent to thc south east was struck, blowing
about thirty miles an hour, and herc tho Pro
fessor determined lo remain, us it would carry
him nour St. Joseph, Michigan. In this
current tho journey proceeded for about au
hour, when the sun went down and the carib
was shrouded in darkues?. There was now
no lunger any object to be seen with which
to comparo thc motion of thc balloon and guage
its rapidity.
In such a place, at such a time, the sensa
tions experienced aro most pccular. Profcs
Bjr Steiner says that loneliness is noname for
tho feeling that caine over him. Beneath
him was tho black void, overhead tho stars
carno out one by one, and twinkled merrily
in the vaulted sky. Toward tho south u
thunder storm was seen passing over Chicago.
At last the moon rose, in ??real, beauty, adding
new grandeur to tho scene. Tho sight is
said to bo one of thc most splendid that can
bc conceived. At this time, (9 o'clock) thc
balloon was 8000 feet above tho lake, souio
twenty five miles from the Michigan shore.
By the light of the moon tho aspect of tho
country was plainly visible. Here a brisk
westerly wind was encountered, which carried
the Professor in an east southeast direction nt
the rate bf fifty miles an hour. Soon thc
Michigan shore was reached, but Hot finding
M good place to laud thc journey was contin
ued. Lights are seen ; rockets ascended now
and then; cannon Was heard, aud occasional'
ly a village was indistinctly seen.
About 10 o'clock a railroad train was heard
thundering along, and presently the head
light of the locomotive was seen flash i n?:

thermometer showing 8;1 degrees. The Pro
fessor bounded up ill his cloak and began ti

son, ol' MacDowel County. Thompson was a
distiller, against whom Bevor had taxes to
collect under the internal fc\ enuc law of thc
United States. Thompson's lund had been
advertised for suie on this day, and Dover
went to thc court house door, and began to
make proclamation ot sale, when Thompson
begun to advance rapidly, drawing a pistai at
tho same lime, and when within ten steps of
Dcver ho (Dover) shot and killed Thompson.
The ball entered neal' the centre of his breast,
killing him instantly. Dcver fired thc second
time after Thomjson had fallen, tho ball en
tering thc arm. Thompson was a leading
and iuflucntiul Radical of thc County, cud
was heard to say ia thc curly part of thc day
that his "Own part? hud turned against him,
and he intended to kill sonic of them." lie
wus heard to suy that every time ho went to
settle with tho internal revenue officers their
claim increased ; that he hud bceu badly
swindled j that ho would hazard his lifo rath
er than longer submit to the gross swindling
of the revenue department. Dover, with au
escort of United States soldiers, has been
moving throughout thc mountains breaking
up distilleries.
- Virginia papers say that thc powder
tanks found by tho wreckers in the iron-clad !
Richmond, now lying in thirty or forty feet
of water, arc in good condition, and thc pow
der as dry and ready for use as before thc
submersion six yens ago.
