A Lesson
Worth romernbering oau bo learned b3'
reading the poll of tho Radical ticket for all
the offices. Tho result shows there wus com
paratively little of what is ktiuwn as "splitting
or scratching." All their candidates oro near
together in strength. If our people had not
nominated a ticket, wo would have bcon dc*
feated throughout by a concentrated opposi
tion. Whether party nominations bo light
or wrong in principle, certain it is, such a
course is the only successful opposition we
can offer to our opponents
Fall.
The farmers of this section bavo enjoyed a
remarkably fino full for harvesting and seed
ing. Up to this time, (tho 1st of November,)
we have had no killing frost, and very little
wind or rain. The roads aro dry and fine for
travel, and the weather ns pleasant ns the
days of September. It is doing much for the
cotton crop, in bringing to maturity more
bolts than could have ripened under other cir
cumstances, and putting off the day of stock
feeding, by keeping tho bay and peavines
fresh and green. This is uo small mutter,
inasmuch as the summer drought in many
places materially reduced tho yield of broad
stuffs.
The Election
We publish tho completo returns of the
election in this issue, which, under all circum
stances, is ns favorable os could bc ex pee te.1.
Our majority is less than horetoforo, but this
may bd ascribed to local inflt onces, us thc
railroad and tho introduction of hands to labor
on it. These generally voted tho radical
ticket and gave it 30 much more strongth. A
good many illegal votes wcro also cast, by re
peating and voting under ago, tho majority
of whioh of courso belongs to tho party of |
moral ideas. With all this, Ooonec has done
well, and has certainly cloared herself of the
imputation of being in tho ranks of the
"doubtful." Wo havo also, in tho face of
numerous independent candidates, splitting
thd strong th of the Reformers, elected our
ontiro nominated ticket.

We learn that a protest has been filed
against two of the strongest Reform boxes in
our County-Center and Bachelor's Retreat, j
Tho chief grounds of'protest are ob arges of
intimidation of voters, not opening thc polls j
et Center t?o*A\ ?inc o'clock, and Dot AWeltiOjg '
all the persons who voted , Nu nero latflda
vita of the managers and good citizens mound
the boxes hove answered tho charge? of in
timidation fully, and explained tho failure to
open tho polls at Center until after tho legal
timo. This resulted, it seems, in a misun
derstanding among the msnngors ns to the
place of election, two of tho. mauagcrs having
gone to Ceutcr campground, and the other
to the Cross Roads, the usuul polling pluoe
fer thc township. They certify it as their
opinion that no ono was hindered from voting
by such misunderstanding. If these boxes
aro thrown out, ousting ?Reform majority of
213 votes, it will result in unseeing one of
tho Reform County Commissioners and sub
stituting the highest Rcpublioan nominee.
When we consider that the default is not on
the part of tho oitizens, und that the County
is strongly reform, we hope no suoh unjust
notion, defeating tho choice of tho people,
will be taken.
In this connection, wo are willing to roedor
dor to our political opponents thut orcdit
which their manly conduct merits. Mr.
WATERMAN, wo learn, hsB refused to sign
tho protest, disclaiming any interest or sym
pathy in its futo, and expresses his willingness
to abide tho decision of tho people. Ho af
firms, we ore informed, that if the rejection
of those boxes would result in seating him,
ho would not accopt tho office in opposition
to what ho feels to be the expressed prefer
ence of a majority of tho people. This is
commendable in Mr. WATERMAN}?nd is Uko
a word fitly spoken, producing good fruit in
tho respect of tho good people of the county.
