heavy flood West of tho Blue Ridge Moun
tains, and considerable damage lins been done
to tho'Chesapeake und Ohio Rail Road, near

both floating down tho Rivnnn, with four hun
dred barrels of flour floating around i hem.
A dwelling house, completely furnished, went,
by this afternoon. Thc Bi vt) na is lilied with
debris of furniture - barns, agricultural im
plements, crops, &c. All the crops on thc
low grounds arc a total loss.
RICHMOND, September 30. - Superinten
dent Kitten, of tho West Virginia hi?o tele
graphs, this morning that n number of build
ings nt Lynchburg, have been swept away, and
that both thc gas and water works are sub
merged. Houses from tho country above
hnvo been floating by nil tho morning, mid
during last night. The new iron bridges of
tho South Side Bond were curried away this
morning.

here is prevailing at Lynchburg. Thc pas
senger bridge across thc James River, n ctn ar

The depots of the Orange and Alexandria
Bail Road, are submerged.

going about over thc tow path nnd through
tho lower streets of thc city.
The water washed up tho main gas pipe,
and nt ll o'clock Inst night Lynchburg was
suddenly thrown into totnl darkness. A
large number of employee on the Southside
Bail Bond are cut off ou tin island below thc
city.
The freshet will roach Richmond about 2
o'clock to day. The river herc bas already
risen n toot. Merchants arc busy in thc low
er portion of thc city removing good in ci ino.

trains from Lynchburg since yesterday.

River, canal and adjacent streams, uro flood
cd. The Long Bridge is under water. Pro
vision has been Hindu to avoid delaying mails
or passengers. Tho weather to day is clear
but very bot. Tho Chain Bridge, was washed
away. Loss to the. Orange and Alexandrin
Railroad is roughly estimated nt $500,000
.A span of tho Chain Bridge is now lodged
against thc Long Bridge. Exports say I.otb
will go. The only present communication
between here and Alexandria is by boat.

at 6 o'clock this morning, and thc river com

the city known as Rockets wns under water,
nod thc scone there beggars description. Two I
or thieu small stures woro swept oil, willi all
their contents. Tho families who had re
mained io their houses, hoping tho Hood
would subside, commenced crying from tho
upper windows for help Boals were brought
and they were saved, but tho larger portion
of their furniture was lost. Two hundred

To night tho bridge of tho Richmond and i
Dunville Railroad still stands, but tho rivet
is still rising, and it is hardly believed it o in
stand much longer. All tho largo cotton,
iron and (lour mills, employing 2,000 bands,
have been forced by thc flood to stop open
lions. Thc city water works have also been
stopped, so damaged that they omi not bo re
paired in two weeks. The reservoir only con
tai ns live days' supply for the oily. All tho
ice bouses in tho city uro on thc river bank,

QUEENWOOD, VA., October 3.- It rained
very heavy again till day yesterday and last
night. Owing to tho destruction of mills
nod tho interruption of railroads and trans
portation, there is much suffering among the
poor ol' the destroyed district, lt is reported
that breadstuff's have nd van ced. Such of tho
passengers here of tho cut off train ns desire
it. will be transported to Charlottesville to
morrow, nod then ferried across More's Creek
and Kivana River to conucct with thc train
on tho opposite side.
