So much Ima been said of Into in re gard to thc. purposes of tho Reformers or Democrats, arid so many "statements were tundo as to the condition Of thc colored people in our sister Stute, North Carolina, aincc tho late August elections and thc success ol' tho Democrats there) that a number of our colored ?nd white friends in Newberry, South Caro lina, induced us to visit North Carolina, to ascertain tho truth or falsity of these rumors. Accordingly, on Tuesday, thc Otb instant, Wc left Frost Level Station, Newberry county, having taken letters of introduction tosevcral gentlemen in North Carolina, and arrived at Charlotte, North Carolina, on Wednesday llig?lt, the 7th instant. lloro wc met willi a number of gentlemen, both white and colored, of both parties, who treated us with kindness nod consideration, and o flo red U.8 every facility to promote the object of our visit. It had been alleged in Newberry that, since tho Conservatives had carried tho election in North Carolina, thc colored people were com polled to carry written passes for their proton lion-that they were now whipped at the publio whipping post-that they were exclu ded from the publi? schools-and that, the "whites ignored thc rights of the colored pco plo under thc constitution, &o. From all sources, both white, and colored, these rumors were flatly denied. Thc ooiTsorvatives assured us of their good-will toward the colored peo plo, and of their determination to protect them in all their rights." Tho Republicans admitted that the Conservativos had doli? nothing of which they could complain, hut did not know what they would dp when they got info power They wer.; not vet ready til go with them. DKAK Sill : Your letter introducing two colored men, Messrs Winn and Davids, has been handed ino by thuin. 1 ha vc introduced them to 'nany of our uio^t intelligent citizens, white and black, (d'both parties, and furnish cd them every means in my power to acquire correct information in. regul'd to thc st ile ol' allah's in North Carolina. I have no hesitation in assuring you, as I have them, that thc very best fueling prevails herc between the rices. During thc heat ol thc recent campaign, having canvassed ex tensivuly myself and mingled thoroughly with the people, I give my word, as a gentleman of honor, that I llave not heard from any man in thc State a single whisper of a wish or .thought of infringing ?my right of tho colored incn. On thc contrary, it is thc settled poli cy, not only of my party friends but id* every body hero, to acquiesce in all that has been given bim and encourage him in every possi ble way iu thc great work of lit ti un himself for citizenship. IO very day convinces us of his value as a laborer, and wc .sincerely hope to make him something moro. Reports of the Ku Klux outrages from two ?or three counties have boen greatly exaggera ted for political purposes, and good men every where disapprove and will frown such vio lenee. Indeed, we were assured that the next Conservativo Leglslnauro will piss a .'stringent law forbidding all secret political pneiatics of every name in tho State, making it a high misdemeanor tobo a member of one. From my inter course with gentlemen of both political ?ur ties, I have been impressed with thc convie timi thal it is both the desire and intention to respect tho rights of thc colored, and to give them such further security for their rights as circumstances may show to be no cessa ry. I will add that, 1 came to thc State but a few days before the election; that, i ninedi ttl ely after the result was known, a number of colored people applied to army officers for employment which would enable them to leave the country willi (lie troops, a4: they were ii frai rd they would bc ill treated, and, perhaps, reduced to slavery again. 1 believe this fear has worn off,- and those who were alarmed on tho subject now feel safe.
