The Three Clierry-Sfones.
Whon I was a schoolboy, moro than thirty
years ago, I remember to have read a story
?which may have been a fiction, bul which was
rory naturally told, and made a deep impres
sion upon mc thou. I will endeavor to draw
it forth from tho locket of my memory, and
relate it ns nearly as I can recollect.
Three young gcutlcmcn, who had finished
tho most substantial part of their repasts were
lingering over their fruit and wino, nt a tav
ern, iu Loudon, when a man of middle agc and
middle stature entered tho public room, where
they were silting, scated himself nt one end ol'ti
small unoccupied table, nod calling thc waiter,
ordered n simple mutton chop and n glass ol
ale. His appearance, at first view, was nol
likely to arrest thc attention of any ono. Ili?
hair was beginning to bo thin and groy j tin
expression of bis countenance was sedate
wich a slight touch perhaps of melancholy
and he wore a grey surtout, with a standing
collar, which manifestly had scon service, i
tho wearer bad not-just such a thing ns ni

Ho might bo taken, plausibly enough, for t
country magistrate, or au attorney of liiuitei
practice, or a schoolmaster.
Ho continued to mcsticatc bis chop and si;

the table, until n cherry-stone, sportively soar
ped from tho thumb and finger of ono of tb
gontlomon at tho opposite toblo, struck hil
on tho right car. His eyes was instantly ut
On the aggressor, and bis ready intolligenc
gathered from the ill-suppressed merrimcii
of tho party that this petty impertinence wa
intentional.
Thc stranger stopped, and picked up tb
ohcrry-stonc, and a scarcely perceptible smil
passed over bis features, ns he carefully wraj
ped it up iu a piece of paper, and placed it i
his pookct. This singular procedure, wit

and missed his opponent. Tho ooptnin lev

the bouo; and, as tho wounded man involun
tarily put his hand to the plaoo, ho remember
ed that it was on thc right car of his antagonist
that tho cherry stone had fallen. Hero end
ed tho first lesson. A month had passed.
His friends cherished tho hope that ho would
hear nothiug moro from tho captain, when
another note-a challenge, of course-and
another of thoso accursed cherry stones arriv
ed, with tho captain's apology, on tho Ecoro
of ill-health, for not sending it before.
Again they met-fired simultaneously, and
thc captain, who was unhurt, shattered tho
right elbow ofh?a antagonist-tho very point
upon which ho had been struck by thc cherry
stone; and hero ended thc second lesson.
There was something awfully inprcssivo in
tho modus operandi and exquisito skill
of his antagonist. Tho third chcrry-stono
i was still in his possession, and tho aggressor
had not forgotten that it had struck thc offend
ing gentleman upon tho left breast. A month
hud passed-another-another-and another
of terrible suspenso ; but nothing was heart
from tho captain. Intelligence had boer
received that he was confined to his lodging;
by illness.
At length thc gentleman who had been hi.'
second in thc former duels once moro presen
ted himself, and tendered another note, which
as tho recipient perceived on taking it
contained tho last of tho cherry stones.
Thc note was superscribed in thc captain':
well known hand, but it was thc writing, cv
idently, of one who wrote feebly. There wa
an unusual solemnity, also, in thc manner o
him who delivered it. Tho seal was broken
and there was thc last cherry stone in a blan!
envelope.

Distinct speaking is heard in thc air from I
low up to a distance of 200 yards; from abo
it is only understood to a range of 100 yar

nu clcvnlion. Other similar phenomenn cc

been observed, but thc results disagree, citl

occur to an extent of ten to twenty per cei:

epigrams to tho British lady Olaudia, with

by St. Paul in his second opistlo to Ti mo
llly. Claudia is thought by somo writers to
bo tho first British Christian. Elab?ralo
proof is brought forward in this matter.
Three persons bearing these uaiues ure spoken
of by St. Paul as his friends, and it is olaim
ed that they were at Homo in less than half
of tho first century. Tho lady Claudia is
said to bo related to Curaotaous who was in
Homo in 51, in G'i Paul was at Homo, and in
G7 murdered by Nero. In 00 Martial died
at au advanced ago. Claudia was said to
have boon a very beautiful woman, and a zeal
ous pioneer in tho Christian civilization of
Britain. That Paul should have commended
her BO highly to thc affections of his brctb

oharaotcr, and that tho poet Martial should
have singled herself and Putlcns, ber hus
band, as shining marka for bis musical pro
ductions, shows their position in tho social
j scalo. Tho historical facts aro all recorded
very minutely, and add a strong and beautiful
link to the olaim of evidence os thc authen
ticity of St. Puul's epistles. A number of
female stars shot suddenly across tho horizon
in tho early days of Christianity. Tho. Em
press Helena, wife of thc Kornau Emperor
Constantino Cblorus, and mother of Constan
tine Great, was a British maiden and not only
instructed tho first Christian Emperor, but
shed thc light of a fino intellect on thc litera
ture of her country. Sho was considered
ono of thc brightest stars in Britain's galaxy
of letters.
Christianity is favorable to female improve
ment. Not to sulfrago-shrieking, but to tho
highest culture of every beautiful womanly
power, and "sweet attractive grace." lt is
thc garden where woman may cultivate tho
loveliest flowers ol'earth, tho finest fruits of
literature, and tho most precious healing
balsams for diseased morals. Woman's
sphere is a high and holy ono, it was so de
signed by ber Creator, and when she stops
out of it her feet must bc soiled with miro
and dirt. Assume poet has said, if she only
worthily fills her proper sphere, "A world is
weak before her."
Er*x" Arkansas has a celebrated will case
which has been hanging in thc court for thir
teen years. The jury at Marion, Arkansas,
recently brought in a verdict for the defend
ant, when tho opposing counsel demanded
that thc Judge should cause tho Jury to bo
polled, and it was accordingly so ordered,
three names had been called, and the quos
sion "ls this your verdict?" addressed to tho
fourth, a man named Mitchell, but before he
could reply bc uttered a keen, sharp scream,
aa if in mortal agony, and dropped apparent
lifeless. Evory effort was made to restore
him, but at hist accounts he was still unable
to speak, and thc great will case of Lackland
vs. Jones is still in abeyance. Thc doctor
pronounces his disease apoplexy. If ho dies

will have to bc tried over ?gain.

youth, and even in his latter years he was

Tho Duko of Wellington's writing was
