WALHALLA, S. C.:

Attention is called to various Now

Corn is now selling in Walhalla, by
retail at $1.75 per bushel, aud hard to get at
that prico. Tho county seems to bo move
noarly oxhaustcd of provisions than ever be
fore. This fact has fixed tho price of flour at
$6 per hundred, notwithstanding wo had a
good wheat crop. Hard timos, another yciuf
$s opparcnt to every ono.
Crops.
Tho Com orop in this County has becu
neriously injured by the long drought. In
nome sections there has not been a season in
-eleven weeks, and thc upland corn is almost
nn ontiro failure. Wo believe tho yield will
be less tho present year thau for any y oar
-since 1845.
Taxes.
Walhalla has presented a livoly appearance
for tho past month, caused by C v. inpouring
.of the citizens to pay their taxes. Our peo
ple have strained every nervo to savo their
property th:3 year, in hopes of a bettor timo
in tho future. Tho largo crop of the past
year and the high price of corn and cotton has
. enabled them iu a great measure to pay up,
~but another year with suoh taxes would sell out
half the county, as wo arcsatisGcd the present
crop will barely support the county. Tho
. entire tax of tho county amounted to some
thing over thirty-three thousand dollars. Of |
. this amount three thousand and thirty-four
dollars have been taken off by individual ap
plications to thc State Auditor. Up to thc
.morning of tho 24lh instant, twenty-one thou
-sand six hundred and eighty-seven dollars
had been paid in, leaving a balance of eight
thousand five hundred dollars, yet to bc col
lected. Wo understand from tho County
Treasurer, that a farther extension of tho
time, without the penalty has been granted,
and that his books will bo kept open until
Saturday tho 4th of September. Wo hopo
by that timo all our citizcus will bo ablo to
make such arrangements, as will save their
^property from execution.

But towards whom is this acrimony shown?
Is it towards tho ignorant blaoks ? I think

is it that profosses to bo tho ncgroo's friend (

such aro tho tuon who will bo detested and
