State Agrioultural Fair will be hold iu Col
umbia on tho 10th, 11th aud 12th of Novem
ber, 1889. This being tho first Fuir since
the war, will possess an unusual interest and

stock, and the various kinds of machinery

Tho " Charleston Courier " informs us that
nt a meeting of tho stockholders of tho Plan
ters' and Mechanics' Hank, hold in that city
on tho 12th instant, 15,007 shares wcro rep

ment to the Directors Mr. C. G. Mom minger

that a letter has been recently received from
Mr. DAVIS, stating that his health is by no
means so precarious as has been lately rcpro
sonted. Every soldier and friend of tho hst
cause will read thcso tidings with foolings
pleasure. IIo was one of us in the great ef
fort to preserve pure and unsulliod tho repub
lican institutions bequeathed to us by our an
cestors, and differed only in that his firmness,
integrity and ability exalted bim to tho head
and front in tho great contest. Thia fact has
made him au object of persecution to a pusil
lanimous foo, but in his dL^raco (?) and suf
fering he sees his highest honor and reward,
tho consciousness that his people still love and
respect him. In history tho brightness of his
greatness will dim tho adventitious lustro of

Tho entire contract for building tho Port
Royal Railroad has been lot out to a Mr. Flan
negan, at tho North, for two millions and a

Tho "Sumter Watchman," of tho 11th
iustaut, states that a few days ago a young
man calling himself Louis Henry Goodwynn,
passed through Sumter, en route to his home
in Madison County, Miss., from Johnson's
Island, Loke Eric Ile had boon wouuded
and captured in Morgan's raid into Ohio, and
taken to that prison, where ho remained until
Doocmbcr last, when ho was taken to Now
fork and kindly ntteuded by ono Col. Sin
gleton, who procured him transportation as
far na Charlotte. N. C. He stated, says tho
" Watchman," that there woro at Johnson's
Island, when ho left that placo, some eighty
six Confederate soldiers, who had not boen
homo or heard from their friends since tho
war. That fivo of these wero from South
Carolina, and he gave their names as follows :
Major Moblcy, ofTairficld, about 82 years
of age, fair complexion, 6 feet 8 inches or 0
feet high. Lieut. Simmons, of Fairfield,
Capt. Zeiglcr and Lieutenant Eastorling, of
Orangoburg, and Lieutenant R. W. Boyd, of
York. Ho begged that thcso names should
bc published, that their friends might learn of
their whereabouts and that they were alive.
Tho " Marion Crescent" has been enlarged
and fitted out in a now dress. Its energetic
Proprietor says : "If my business shall pros
per hereafter as it has done in the past year,

Homicides in the State
On Mondoy tho 9th, says tho "Charleston
Nows," a colored man named Albert Mill
house killed Lcvinia Prislow, his mother-in
law. Tho parties resided on Windsor hill
plantation, on Gooso creek, about 15 miles

An altercation, occurred last Wednesday on
tho Greenville and Columbia Railroad, aboui
seven miles abovo Columbia, botweon Wm,
W. Marshall and Proatonv Brooks, both ool

another tho stomach. Tho latter is reported
to have said tbat two men eonocalcd by the
wayside had fited simultaneously as they saw

Ho identified ono of tho party os George Ad
dison, Jr., a brother of the young lady of the
affair. The wounded Cresswell is now an
inmnto of a private houso in Edgofield. No
arrests havo yet hoon made.

that at tho recent term of Court for Lexing
ton County, Dr. F. S. Lowio WOB tried for tho
killing of J. Elliott Drufts, and found not
guilty. Tho cause of the homioido was crim
iuul iutorcourtio of tho deceased with tho pris,
oner's wifo. Dr. Lewie is a Democratic mem
ber of tho South Carolina Legislature. Both
parties wero men of standing and popularity.
WASHINGTON, August 12.-The Cubans
have official adviocs to thc 2d. The leaders
stato that wero belligerent rights aceorded
thom by the United States such would bo tho
effect in Cuba as to enable thom to secure
possession of tho entire islaud, oxcopt Havana,
within thirty days. The Cubans throughout
tho island aro in sympathy with tho C?spedes
government, and tho disaffection of the Span
ish troops would leavo tho Spanish Govern
ment without on army. Tt is reported that
a serious difficulty exists in thc volunteer
organization.
Four hundred troops from St. Jago do
Cuba were cupturcd by Jordan. A force sent
by Valma da to relieve them, wero defeated
with a loss of ono half their force.
It is reported that the Spauiards have been
driven from tho Ciuco Villas district with
heavy 1O?>S. Tho Cubans aro now in posses
sion of thc entire district. Jordan bas ac
complished Iiis purpose everywhere-his
troops, inspirited by successes, aro in oxocl
lent spirits.

of George IL Pondlcton, by thc Executive

nor of Ohio, vice General Rosenoranz, declin

its best representatives, the sign is a good
ono. Mr. Pendleton has boen colled "tho
rising star of tho West." Ho is a man of
loftly character and eminent abilities, com
bines in himself many of the elomonts that go
to form a high ordor of statesmanship. A De
mocrat by conviction, his mind is yet broad
enough to take in tho interest of tho whola
oountry. In tho last Presidential canvass,
no man mado abler speeches, and his firm ut*
toranocs, not wanting in a beautiful poetic

and admiration. Ohio will do well to oioot
