THE QUAND JURY
IQ tboir preso^mont, recommended1 tho
County Oomrois?ionors of tho hvo Counties j
to sell es carty ea practioablo,, the Poor farm
belonging to tho two Counties, and purchase
others more convenient in eaoh County. This
is directly the reverso of tho recommendation
of the O rand Jury of Ooouee County, whioh
looked to the rotaioiug for tho presont tho now
almost self-sustaining alms-houso of the two
Counties. We do earnestly hope tho recom
mendation of tho Jury of Ooouee will bo
adopted. Tho present Poor Form is a good
ono, containing a considerable amount of river
bottom and good upland. It has enough puq
to support and keep employed tho paupers of |
both Counties, and but for tho division of old
Piokens District, would have continued tho
Poor farm for a century to oom?. It mny
and might well continue so, even under the
presont condition of things, and in our judg
j mont, should do so until tho Counties are out
of dobt, tho taxos lighter, and our people more
prosperous. Is there any complaint that the
paupers aro badly treated, or of want of land,
or bouses, or other accommodations for their
comfort. On the contrary, the facts show ev
erything is going on smoothly, and to thc
comfort and satisfaction of tho paupers as well
as lo economy in tho publio expenditures.
The present system requires tho pay of but
ono Steward, and tho expenses of but ono
household. Why then change it ? IVe hope
tho Counties will And it politic (as it is) to
continuo tho present arrangement for the poor
for many years to come.
Tho Grand Jury also prosonted tho high
taxes imposed on the County?
Tho publio offices Wore presented os well
kept, and everything in perfeot order. Wc
did not oxamine tho offices, but can Bay that
no County in tho Stato can muster amore

THE M AUCH TO THE bo AT.
Altogether too soon, as it seemed, tho ad
monition carno from Captain King that WC
must embark, so Ibo lino of maro h was re
sumed, tho band With their battered instru
ments piping "Dixie," While tho colored mob
yelled "Hally Round tho Flag, Boys," and
with tho vilest and most insulting cries, en
deavored to bring ob a confllot. Several times
it was noeesary to halt and olear the Way with
tho bayonet-a thing tho mob scorned to en
tertain a great respect for, dodging away thc
moment ono was pointed at them, whilo those
who woro so bardy as to come up too near
and receive a gentle prick from it danced and
howled in high keys. On ono street a cobble
stone was thrown at tho procession and smash
ed a gas light over tho heads of somo of tho
party, fortunately doing no other damage.
Although thero were thirty or forty rovolvers
in tho party, not a single shot Was fired by
any of tho Savannah excursionists. Smarting
us thoy all wero under tho sonso of tho many
indignities and insults heaped Upon them,
their forbearance was certainly commendable,
and all tho more so when it is considered that
no provocation had boon given the mob by
any of tho party, tho first disturbnno having
been caused by a quarrel between soldiorf
and negroes. It is hard io conceive why thc
vials of their wrath should have boon parti
oulurly poured out Upon thc hoads of peneca
hie, quiet iud unoffending visitors, unless, ot
their erics would scorn to indicate, they pro
posed to show that "tho colored boys run thai
town," and that Savannahions, if they hoc
rights at homey wero entitled to no considera

The eutiro party praised tho forethought
coolness and judgment of General Anderson
to whom thoy woro immediately indobtcd foi
tho military escort, for upon his application t<
tho commanda nt it was tendered "with ploa
