ate, the written acceptance by Grant and
Coif?? of the Presidency ?nd Vicc-Presidcecy?
wnn prenented. A bill to allow compensation
to the office holders failing to take the oath,
in pending.
In thc Senate, a joint rcnolutron waa intro
duced requiring parties who desire relief from
political disabilities, to fpply in writing over
their own signature, detailing the grounds
upon which such relief is asked. The bill
paying Federal officers in the Southern States
who ?rc unable to take the required oath^
elicited a long debate, but no action was taken.
The Indian appropriation bill was resumed,
and discussed until recess.
In the House, Blackburnc introduced a
resolution removing political disabilities from
all persons in the United States, imposed by
thc fourteenth amendment; which was refer?
red to tho Reconstruction Committee.
Under thc regular cal), the Hollie passed
tho bill authorizing thc Secretary of the
Trotisury to recall 830,000,000 of surplus
gold . granting a lo*n bf $5,000,000 to the
New Orlcnns and Selma Railroad and Immi
gration Association. A joint resolution was
passed authorizing tho Northern Pacific Road,
from Lake Superior to Puget Sound, to mort
gage its road and tolegraph to ralso funds for
its completion. Tho bill relieving oertnin
political disabilities, heretofore reported from
the Reconstruction Committee, were taken wp.
Without action adjourned.
