Tub .Vermont Election.?The nows
from Vermont, says tho " Washington Ex
press, is exceedingly gratifying. Tho tclo
gruph announces that in nearly every town
the Democrats have increased their vote. The
returns show an incrcn.su on their side of fifty
per cent., while the Republican majority, as
was stated recently, will bo about 20,000.?
In 1801, Lincoln's majority was 20,098.?
The result is particularly gratifying, as but
little effort was mudo by the Democratic ma
jority. There are no Democratic papers in
the State, and it was given over by common
consent to our opponents. It will not require
as large a gain in other States to secure the
election of Seymour and Blair by a very largo
majority. Still our friends must work and
work to the end. Let no over-conlidonce in
duce them to relax their efforts to bring peace
and prosperity once ngaiu to our distracted
huid.
iC5>~ V Saratoga correspondent, writing of
the fashion there, says, among oohor thiags,
that u somo women dross to please oaoh oth
er; somo to ploasc men, or rather ono man,
for as a general thing, thoy despise mon's
opinions on millinery. But tho most dressy
women don't dress to ploaso anybody ; they
dress to worry other women."

Wheat Torrent.?It is stated that
over fifteen thousand saoks of wheat arc on
tho Mississippi bauks, nonr Kcokuk, waiting
for high water for transportation down; aud
wo learn a Chicago paper that one hundred
and fifty cars would not supply the daily de
mands of the Burliogton aud Missouri road.
There never was such a trado in whoat. It
is rushing in liko a mighty torrent.
Question and Answer.?If the negroes
of the Southern States should all go for Sey
mour aud Blair, and elect them, what will
become of Frank Blair's programme ? What
will become of tho cry that this is a whito
man's government ??Nino York Sun.
Tho cry will have boon sustained that this
is a whito man's government, and that the
negroes, disgusted with the scalawags, arc
disposed to sustain it as a white mau's gov
ernment.?Louisville Journal.
Kx-Oov. Thoma-i II. Seymour died at his

Another letter received here from Chicago,
?aya that if Pennsylvania and Indiana voto
for tho Democrats in Ootobcr, Illinois will be
carried by 30,000.
The E^ '? Triok.?While a
Dutchman was passing through a oifcy in Vor
mont, a Yankee onmo up to him and said,
"Shon, if you treat to tho cider, I will learn
you a trick." Shon agreed. Yank then
placed his hand against, a fence and told him
to striko it as hard as ho could. Shon, not
thinking that any harm oould befall him by
doing bo, struck a blacksmith's blow, but in
stoad of hitting Yank's baud, tho latter jerk
ing it way, poor Shon struck tho fonoo board,
knocking it off. " Moin Gott in h?mmel !"
oriod Shon, " what you makes foolish ? I
knock miuo hand off oloau up to do elbow 1??
Oh, sockcr bliU ! my poor fr*u, what will sho
say ?"
Poor Shon Was bouud to havo f?vongo ; s?
one day, as he was passing through a fiold, ho
espied a man. Going up to him he said,
t( Mynheer, I show you one little trick for
nodding." As thoro was no fonoo or tr?o
near, Shon put his hand against his mouth
and said, u Strike just so hard as you oan."
Mynheer struck, and Shon pulled away his
hand arid received the blow on his mouth,
bleeding, and commenced dancing with pain.
