DEAR CHILDREN : As our clever Editor
has booh so kind as to publish thc two first
?ornps sent, I am encouraged to write you an
other letter. In my last scrap I told you wc
had then about forty bright-eyed boys and
girls in our Sunday School. Our School lins
now increased to about sixty-four scholars and
twelve officers and teachers, making seventy
*ix in all. Has your Sunday School been
growing that fast ? You must electioneer
with all tho little boys and girls in your neigh
borhood to go to your Sunday School and
learn about Jesus-tho way to Heaven. But
I'm not going to write this epistle about Sun
day Schools altogether, although 1 love them
woll enough to write a great deal more about
thom.
I want to send you a few lines this timo on
memory. You hear folks talk about memori
zing this or that. Our teacher used to tell us
to say, " Commit to memory," instead of !
" momorizo." Sometimes pcoplo speak of
"short memories"-i. e.: they forgot what
they boar or road. It would bo a good thing
if they would forgot nil thc ohaif ; but then
tho loins of their minds should bo girded up
tight enough to hold thc wheat. If we don't
be careful though, wc viii remember the trash
and forget the solid and sensible. Once a
good man was going to church on Sunday and
met a bad roan. " Ho !" said tho bnd man,
"did you meet ahoy driving n cart, with
plows and boos, eco., in it?" "Yea," an
swered thc good man ; " and I am afraid he
belongs to a family with short memories, too."
"Why so?" neked thc Sabbath-breaker.
"Because," replied tho good man, " bc forgot
that command of Cod, 'Remember thc Sab
bath day to koop it holy.' " Exodus, 20th I
chapter, and 8th verse.
" One Sunday morning an old gentleman !
was going to church. Ile was a happy, cheer
ful ohristian, who had a very great respect for
tho Sabbath. Ile was, however, somewhat
singular in his manner of giving reproof. As
he was going along, ho met a mau driving a
heavily loaded cart through tho town. When
tho old gontlcman came opposito the cart he
gradually stopped, and, lifting up both hands,
as if in alarm, ho exclaimed, as he gazed un
der tho cart: 'There, there, you arc going
over it j you have gono right over it.' Tho
driver was frightened, and instantly cried out,
' Whoa, whoa,' and brought his horse to a
stand. He then looked under thc wheels, ex
pecting to soc thc mangled remains of some
innocent child, or at least somo poor dog or
pig that had been crushed to death. But af
ter gazing nil about, and seeing nothing tinder
the wheels, ho looked at the old gentleman
who lind so strangely arrested his attention,
and anxiously asked, f What have I gone over,
sir?' * Over thc fourth commandment^ was
tho reply. 'Remember tho Sabbath day to
keep it holy.' That cart-driver had a short
memory-so short, at least, that he did not
remember to keep r?nt uf tho plain commands
of God. And don't you reckon that all who
drive their market wagons on tho Lord's day
aro some akin to him in shortness of memory ?
Well, now my young friends, from what I
Lavo Written in this little letter you may lonrn
this ono important lesson : " Remember tho
Sabbath day to keep it holy." 1st. Remem
ber it. Bon't let it slip your mind. Koop it
in your memory. Think about it and modi
tate upon it prayerfully. 2d. " Koop it ho
ly." It will do you no good to remombor it
unless you koop it. And it will do you but
little good, if any, to keep it unless you keep
it holy-in a holy manner. The good Boot
tolla us that wo aro not to do "our own vrnya,
nor find our own pleasure, nor speak our own
words," on this holy day. Isaiah, 68-13.
But we should think and speak for God, wor
shipping His groat nnmo " in tho benuty of
holiness." You should attend tho Sunday
School and recito your lessons woll. Go to
church and he>ar tho man of God preach. Be
attcntivo and engage in tho hymns and prny
ors with tho congregation, Bo .serious and
devout, behaving yoursolf well in tho houso
of God. Bo good boys and girls on tho Sab
bath and ali other days of your lives. Give
yourselves to tho. blessed Lord Jesus Christ
