inmates. Tho door on tho basement was

occupied tho third story. As n last resort
strenuous efforts were then rondo with tho as
sistance of ladders, to remove the grating from
one of tho windows, which proved ineffectual.
At this time thc cries and screams of thc suff
ering inmates wero heart-rending. Tho juil
was in flames and twenty two human beings
wero hoing burnt to death without any possible
relief. Human agency could o?'fect nothing,
every effort was mudo to rescue thom which
could bo suggested, but all to no pw pose, tho
devouring flames soon consumed thom, and in
the charred mim?is only to bo seen thc ghust
ly spectaelo of bones.
I At the time tho jail caught fire there wero
: in it twenty-three prisoners. Twenty-two ne
groes were confined in tho upper cells on tho
third floor, among Avlioni wero three woroon.
On the second story lto%evt II. Flinn, n white
man, was confined on bail process. Mr. M.
F. Melinde, hy great din ri pg, rushed to Mr.
Flinn's room, which was tho first one nt thc
head of the stairway, and unlooked tho door,
bc thereby making his escape. Mr. McBride
desosves. tho highest credit, butin his attempt
o savo thc prisoner, ho canto nigh losing his
own lifo. Ile fell twice by suffocation bofojfo
ho reached thc foot of tho staircase.
" Where every ono did so well it would bo
wrong to make invidious distinctions, but we
cannot withhold our meed of proisc of tho su
perhuman efforts of Lieutenant Boss, private
Wm. Green (who- mounted a ladder nt tho
most perilous crisis, and ascended to a window
on tho third story,) Sheriff Mathews, Mr.
Beck, Joe and WilliamBlakcly, (colored,)
