REPORT f Of thc Commissioners of tim Poor for Pick ens District, to Pall Term, 1800. rp HE Commissioners of tho Poor for Piok X cns District would respectfully repu t, That, owing to the fact of there hav/ng been no taxes collected in the year 1805, our Doun! lias fallon considerably in debt, which ns yet, wo have not been able fully to disuhflrgo. Un der the new order of things it wtw impossible to form anything like a correct estimate of thc nuiount of the State Tax for this year, and for that reason, ns well ns a fear on tho part of tho Hoard of over taxing our impoverished community, tho assessment for tho Poor, (5 per cent.) which has given ns only 8355, as will appear by reference to tho Treasurer's exhibit, has been found to ho insufficient to meet tho claims aguinst us. The amount of tho Hoard's i u deb ted ness is, us nearly as wo eau 'ascertain, sumo claims not having been as yet rendered, some seven or eight hundred dollars, the greater part of willoh is due thc Lunatic Asylum from July, ISOi, down to thc present timo. Tlic Legislature having, hy Act nt its last extra .session, required tho Com missioners of Public Buildings to pay over to thc Commis- I sinners of Poor for this District, a certain j fund in their hand?, wc will, when it is re ceived hy us, be able, wc hope, to wipe, out all of our liabilities without further taxation, ns well as to erect more buildings at our Poor House, if an increase of pauperism, which is now apprehended, should make it necessary. The Hoard has had snell repairs made to tho houses now on the premises, as circum stances would allow, and think tho u sufficient for the. present nu ober of inmates. Tho number of Paupers now in tho Poor House is ten : Throe men, five women, and two children. Tho men are able to perform some outdoor labor ; indeed, are quite useful in oarrying on the business of tho tann. Two of the. women are very old and Infirm, one tm invalid, and only one of them that is of much assistance tu the Stewardess. Thc Board has three Lunatics in the Asy lum : Hiram Kelly, Martha Hird and ll. ll. Wilson, whose expenses are very heavy and constitute tho principal part of our indebted ness. The establishment, so far ns provisions arc concerned, is nearly self-sustaining, and un less thc number of Paupers should be increased, the present crop will be sufficient for their maintenance.
