with reference, to thc Tennessee Central Roil
Road, which nre being contributed by J. I).
H. DeBoW, esq., its President, nnd the Fditor
Dc Bow* s Review, to tho "Nashville Gazette,"
will bo read with interest nnd pleasure by the
pcoplo of this section nnd State.
Lot it bo taken for granted too that tho direct
connection between Knoxville nnd Charleston
will bo secured, for which Cincinnati is also
actively moving. It is an old dream of tho
pcoplo of Charleston, likely now to bo real
ized. Mr. Trcnholm said lately in his Report
referring to tho Bluo Ridge Road : " Thirty
four milos have been built substantially and
completely, nnd nro now in operation ; one
hundrod and sixty-four milos rcmnin, of which
a largo part of tho heaviest and most costly
work has been done. Twenty miles of thc
grading South of Knoxvillo and tho most
diffioult'portion of tho work required in bridg
ing the Helston) havo be?n completed."
I Difficulty ia Baltimore.
Thc patriotic city of Baltimore is passing
through tho samo cruoiblo of tribulation, says
tho " Yorkvillo Enquirer," that Now Orleans
and other places South have experienced.
Tho radical Legislature of Maryland, nt its
last session, passed an Act conferring extra
ordinary powers upon tho Police Commission
ers of Baltimore, in sup.M vising thc ballot
box. The Act further provides, that for any
malfeasance in office, these Commissionere
may be brought before thc L?gislature for tri
al and dismissal; or if that body be not in
session, then before tho Governor of thc State.
After thc rooont Mayor's election, allega
tions of fraud and corruption by the Commis
sioners, in thc registry of voters, wero made
to (Jovernor Swann. These allegations dis
played un amount of corruption that required
examination, and Covcrnot Swami immediate
ly summoned tho Commissioners to appear be
fore bim to answer to tho charges. This thoj
declined to do. Thereupon tho Governor ii
proceeding with the investigation which maj
result in their dismissal.
But this is not the rea! difficulty. Gov
.Swann ?sn Johnson-Republican, and the Com
missioners arc all Radicals. The charge
against, them supported by competent teat!
ninny, were that they had excluded voter
from the polls because of their conservati*"
principle*, und admitted the votes of a differer
order of polities. Hence thc violence man
tested by tho Commissioner*, and tho seen
organizations of radicals in Maryland, Pent
sylvania and elsewhere, to support them by a
appeal to arms.
Tho excitement, in view of these violet
proceedings, has become intense. Govern
