Coldest Weather in Rf>irpntT7 Vn?r? !
IN NK\Y YOHK.
The cold snap of yestcrdiy took us all j
l>y surprise, for tho change in tho weather j
was nr?t only very and Jon and very great,
but the temperature of tho atmosphere was
lower than it hud been before in this city
in seventy years. At least we have the
word of tho Sago of Brooklyn Heights for
the fact, and his thermometer and weather
tables arc not to be disputed. Tho stratigcotjpnrtof
the phenomena was that though
tho sun was shining brightly tho intensity
of the o >ld kept gradually increasing from
sunrise until noon, when tho mercury in
t'.ie thermometer touchcd nine below zero.
J'euplo suddenly began to discover that
uicir sioves, stcam-pipcs and registers did
not give any heat, and business men, as
they hurried down, didn't know what to
make of the icicles which hung from their
moustaches like the pendants from a glass
chandelier.
There must havo been terrible suffering
among the poor who wore not prepared
with suit iblo defouecs against the unlookedfor-rigors
of the season ; and we fear that
there will bo reports of great distress on
board of ships on the coast. Several cases
of suffering have already been reported, and
one of an omnibus driver having actually
frozen to death. Tho mont remarkable effects
of tho cold were seen on the J Jay and
rlVcrs, whero a thick cloud of steam was
seen nil day looking as though a thousand
boilers wore letting their steam escape.?
The temperature of tho air was so much
lower than that of the water, that the vapor
ascended from tho surface as thnmrli
the (iulf St roam, with its tepid billows,
had suddenly made a divergence through
Long island Sound into our harbor. There
was but little icc in the river during the
day, but plenty was found last night, and
it will not requiro many such days as yes- i
tcrday to put an entire stoppage to the navigation
to the Sound.
The docks along tho East and North llivers
were frozen, mating it difficult, and in
norae coses impossible, to move vessels ly;<1..

The prospect uow is that the steam iceboats
will soon bo required to keep tho

Among the nuuibcr of cases in which
peoplo were badly frozen during the day.
was that of a man named Webb, who was
driving one of tho Broadway and Sixth and
Seventh avenue stages, lie was taken
